Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I had just got this pipefish to accept brine shrimp and even new life spectrum (small fish formula) and this happens.
What was I? Hitler in a past life?
I seem to be stumbling from one tank disaster to the next.
The only thing I can detect is wrong in this tank is high nitrates (now 40+).
Salinity 1.023 Ph 8.0 Amm 0 Nitrite 0
The bloody anemone didn't even eat the whole thing, the exoskeleton on the pipefish stopped it and any other scavengers from doing their jobs.

Was in a bad mood all day.
Normally when a fish dies (and its happening a lot to me these days) I get frustrated with whatever it is I'm doing wrong, or the not knowing what the hell I did wrong.
I don't usually get attached emotionally to them.
But this little guy really pissed me off, it really did.
Does anyone know what the Anemone is?
I bought it off ebay (yes I know) from a UK seller, also got some tiny cleaner type shrimp that dissapeared (hawkfish) and 10 snails that died immediately.
The two anemones however are thriving. This red one and a smaller brown version.
Next to die I fear are two yellow Clown Gobies that both have emaciated stomachs and are not eating. I can't figure it out.
I've got two internal filters, one running normal filter media and a bag of live sand, and the other running this:

If any marine experts are able to travel to Rush I would greatly appreciate some help.

No blue dots, just pure reddy/pink.Agree with holger, they look like beadlet anemones, use to keep they when on hols. in Carne beach in Wexford! Have they blue dots at the base of the tentacles?
Ditto the brown one, just brown!
Heres that guys auctions:
Red Anemone
Full package
So are these guys selling stuff they fish out of rock pools at the bloody beach?

Pipefish in general dont do well with anemones of any sort.
Do not keep them with corals or anemones that possess potent stinging tentacles. Also pipefish tend to feed on the critters in live rock and after a few days move onto live/frozen brimeshrimp. Best of look with the next batch!

Quote from doddgy ebay site
The Reef Anemone is found in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, in lagoons or on inner reefs, as individuals, or loose groups. It is never found in connected clusters. Its disc diameter is of 1”-4” but a disc of about 2” is common in an aquarium. The base color is usually Deep Red to Pink. The tentacles may occasionally develop a bubble-like appearance to them. It prefers to bury its base in the sand or into the crevice of a rock for protection.

The photo above is what a reel amemone form the caribean should look like, the prices he is charging would not even pay for the shipping cost, it would be intersting to see have a vets cert for his importation:laugh:
This has given me a great idea, what about flocking weeds from the local ditch or even the back gardern and selling on ebay as aquatic plants, that sounds like a good money spinner:)

I'm going to contact that seller and ask just what the hell he's selling, and then maybe report him.
The Red anemone actually does have a ring of blue dots around the outermost ring of tentacles, i don't know how i've never noticed that before.

The fish seem to know to keep well away though.
I get the feeling the pipefish was dead as it never went near its corner of the tank.
