Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just one last question? Marine newbee

Hi All thanks for all your advice, cycling of the tank is going ok all the brown algea is now been replaced by the green stuff!.
Anyway I was down in my local shop today ...I know they try to sell you as much as you can but they where saying to me when my thank is up and running that I would have to supplment with Calcium, Mag, and coral food, all of them 3 would cost nearly 60e! plus the mag test kit..
I know I'll have to supplment my soft corals when they are up and running but whats the best value supplment you can buy what do ye use?
When you do water changes are you adding the nutrients, is it best to buy the RO water and add some of the red sea coral pro salt.
Any help would be appreciated I know marine set up is expensive but I dont want to waste money on stuff I dont need Id rather put the money into a nice coral or fish or starfish or crab...you get what I mean?

Regular water changes using quality salt should keep your calcium and mag levels up to scratch. You'll probably only need supplements if you have a heavily stocked tank.

Don't get too caught up trying to keep your levels spot on. From memory I think Calcium should be around the 400 mark. When I tested mine it was always around 380. I changed salt, bought a load of test kits that I can't even remember now (one was Organics!), increased the volume and frequency of my water changes. After all that, the calcium remained at 380, and I never had any problems with livestock!

Agree with above water changes are a must. I use Brightwell coral food products to feed my various softies, lps and mushrooms along with Marine Snow, I use three of them along with the snow and feed 1 a day and alternate for variety, make sure you don't overfeed.

hi ya...sorry new to this but do all your levels of calium amd magesium not have to be ballanced????

so if your levels of calcium were down 20 percent and you do water change of 20 percent, are the remaining 80 percent of water in tank still not down 20 percent?????

does coral food compensate for this???
