Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,

LEDs sound great but I have never seen them for myself on any sort of a large set up so my question is. Has anyone seen or used LED lights on a large marine tank? How good are they really? and do they live up to thier claims?I am thinking of going down this route and get rid of my halides due to running costs,at present I have 2x arcadia series 4 250w going on my 9ft tank and as you are aware this aint cheap.
So any first hand info welcome.

Thanks Stevo

Hey Lar, have seen this mag around but have never bought it as I do most of my research online and through word of mouth. Is it worth picking up? Sry for the hijack...

Hi,
In my opinion Practical Fishkeeing is interesting and maybe I'm a little bit old fashion: the internet is great source of information but a paper copy of a magazine is gorgeous. :)
LED lighting gives big savings on cost seen from the first ESB bill (have 20 bulbs downstairs), light is different. In the mentioned article on 10 pages they described main groups of leds suitable for aquariums available in the UK. It's worth reading the article and to have comparison with typical bulbs.
Then you can start looking for cheaper led solutions on the net.

hi all

could someone give us a quick rundown
on the findings of the pfk tests?

OP, heres a large thread about it
but it is geared towards the planted tank
ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=3687
they are using big 5mm LEDS with 3w output per led

the only thing i can add is that small leds
are completely useless as the sole light source (i have tried it)
they look amazingly bright to the eye
but have no penetration whatsoever, and i used a lot
(100+ on a 3' tank)

Generally, they recommend them but they only tested 8 different LED sources. Most of LED lighting they tested was below 100 pcs in a unit (from 2 to 91) and there was only one that had 342 Leds in a set. Detailed test results can be viewed at PFK web page but I'm not registered there. Sorry, cannot help more.
