Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey Lads,
I just got a secondhand Juwel Trigon 190 with a 405 filter and i took out the Juwel internal filter and i was wondering
what media would you run in it and in what order. I will have about 25kg of live rock in the tank and am getting a Deltec mc500 skimmer at the weekend. The t5 lights will have to be left there until funds become available or Santa might bring a upgrade. Oh and will i need to put boiling water through the filter and pipes to kill any bad bacteria, there's sponge and bio-balls in it at the moment as it was a freshwater setup.
Thanks Mick

It wouldnt do any harm to clean that filter thoroughly before using it in a new marine setup. Since your live rock will be the biological filtration I would load the canister with RowaPhos or PhosEx Ultra to remove phosphates and De-Nitrate (by Seachem) or Nitra Zorb to remove nitrates. This, along with that powerful skimmer should keep your water pristine. Throw in some coarse sponge to mechanically filter the water but try to clean them off bi-weekly. Without going into too much detail you may also be interested in looking into the Bio Pellets that are used in reactors. They are a bacterial culture that eats nitrates and are supposed to be the dogs. Hope this helps.

Can I add something? I recently opened a 405 and was surprised by what I found, it had been used in a Marine too and the screws holding the top parts together had a degree of rust on them, not sure of the importance of this but just a heads up.

hi,

I have a similar set up to yourself,

I would put just carbon and Phos ex in the filter with filter wool or sponge
at each end, be sure to change this every two weeks, so it does not become a biological filter,

The live rock and skimmer will do the filtration if you stock light on the fish,

I have put a UV filter on the return pipe of the filter, as in new tanks you tend to change things a lot
which causes stress and white spot. The UV stopped all this for me.

Im 5 months in and have had no losses yet thank god.

Your spot on John. Im actually setting up a freshwater tank right now and had this stuff on the brain when I replied to the poster  . @ mixer, apolgies for that. Try using as little mechanical filtration as posssible and remove your bio balls. You wont need them with all that live rock in there. To be honest, that skimmer and a good wc regime will keep those nitrates down more efficiently than chemical filtration. Thats not to say dont use it but its good housekeeping that wins out in the end imo. Just watch the stocking levels and dont overfeed and you will do fine ;).

Thanks Jay, iam finding it very hard to leave it alone till the weekend its the same longing i had when i gave up the fags.
Where is the best place to get coral sand and at the best price, i say i will need about 20kg to give the base a good inch covering.

Hi Mick,

I saw small Bags in Petstop and large ones in FFF and Seahorse. Small Bags around 10 euro.
