Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Inspiration needed for a corner tank

Hi,

I haven't been on here in ages, been busy with work. But back looking for help again!!!
Due to a refurb of our living room my 4ft aquarium doesn't fit in so well anymoreSo we decided to buy a corner aquarium as it will suit the space better.

We got a juwel trigon 350. But I'm drawing a blank on how to scape it.

Has anybody got any ideas to point me in the right direction or any photos of your own corner tanks.

I would like to plant some of the tank but I would rather not go down the route of carbon injection. I don't mind using liquid carbon.

The lights are the standard lights that come with the tank which are 2 x 24 watt and 2 x 45 watt t5 fluorescent tubes

Any ideas, hints or tips on layout or where to start are really appreciated as I'm totally lost

Thanx
Tommy

How's it going just taught I'd mention to do a search "planted trigon 350" in Google images. Never considered them for a planted tank but looking on the web makes me jealous that I don't have one :D.

Easy carbo is good so you won't have to go with pressurised co2. I'd like to see it when you go with your scape so don't forget to post pictures :)

Hi joe.
I had a look alright they do look great it's just trying to decide which way to go with it and how to make the most of the depth in the centre of the tank.
It's a beautiful tank alright and I can't wait to get it set up. I'll defo put some pics up but if any of my past projects are anything to go by I'll probably Change it at least 10 times before I'm happy with it !!

I got a trigon recently and I'm still in the process of setting it up. The one tip I'd have is 'scape it from that back corner. Make whatever you place back there (wood, stones, plants) you centrepiece and build the rest of it around that. What I love about the corner tanks is that they give a great sense of visual depth and also leave plenty of swimming space.

Have you got stone? I think a mountain range affect coming out of the corner would look good, planted around the lower rock work

Cheers for all the advice everyone. Can't wait to get it started.

Hi Q_comets, I have just gathered some stone from outside. It's green slate so it should be aquarium safe and make an interesting shape.

Just a quick question. When you are putting in fairly large rocks do I need to put anything under them to protect the glass?

Irish-zx10r your tank looks great. Them plastic plants look very real.

Lemonjelly are you leaving the original filter in the tank or changing it for external.

Thanx again. Really appreciate the input

I went out to the bog for a walk and piecked up wood then tied pladtic plants around the wood to give it a better look i have two real plants java fern but they havent grown much. The other pladtic plants came from pots that you would use on a mantle piece i also tied them to some wood and they look better in the tank. If you have the corner box filter you be better take it out and get a good external filter

I got rid of the internal, partly because I don't think they're particularly good and partly it was a visual thing. I'll either build some kind of filter myself or I'll use a good old air powered sponge filter

Probably best to put stirofoam under the rocks. It's like 1.26 in woodies for a 4ft x 2ft sheet I'm sure they have smaller sheets I was just looking for a piece to fit my tank at the time. Better safe than sorry.

Well I finally got the tank set up,

Not quiet how I would like it but it still looks pretty good, to me anyway!!

I left the internal filter where it was for now and just used the wood from my old set up. and used some green slate I had in the garden.

I will change the filter to an external in the future, need to get a bit of spare cash together as the taxman send an unwanted surprise!! :(

I'm at work now but will post a few pictures when I get home.

Tommy

I have a JBL Crystalprofi e901 if you're looking for one at some point.

I'm not sure what happened my last post. Didn't put up half of the txt.

The first pic was 8 days ago. The second one is today after a water change. The plants seem to be filling in great after a week.

Looks great to me.....

When I do my stock change, Ill be changing to new substrate with real plants too......
I do love the trigon 350 and I think it would take a very big corner tank with equal construction to make me want to change from mine

I have a trigon 190 as well as the 350 and I dont think the 190's are anywhere near as nice as the 350

I looked for a 500litre corner tank earlier this year....... MENTAL money but ill keep searching till i find one then get shot of the 190

Tank looks good. It's always very cool when you arrange and plant a tank and ot looks very unnatural and contrived... and then a few weeks later the growth happens, the lines soften and it starts to look a piece of nature.

Just an update, the tank is doing great. Plants are filling in nicely.
Got some new stock over the Christmas 4 angelfish and 4 gouramis all settled in great.
And to make things even better my nitrates are keeping really low. Consistently less than 5 even after two weeks without a water change.
Happy days!!

Hi joe,

I thought I had the picture up I'll try again without text. I got 2 dwarf red gouramis and 2 blue dwarf gouramis. They are class little fish between them and the Angels they really liven up the tank.

Lemon a 3d background would really make the tank, I wish I had had the time to wait to get one, or make one, it would be a big job to put one in now while the tank is full, maybe in the future!!

It's filling out very nicely. I only wish I had the patience for a planted tank ;)

While the ttank looks very very good, it looks a bit flat maybe?

Is there a more colourful plant that you can put into the middle to make the centre more vibrant and kinda stand out a bit better?
