Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey all,

I was just curious if there's anybody else on the fourms who are keeping Brackish set-ups? i know i cant be the only one, because every time i go into Whacker's, he's sold more brackish fish! i know that Darren had a brackish set-up untill recently. ive been keeping Brackish fish for nearly 2 years now, and have a nice 100 gallon tank, and some nice sized fish in it now! so, is there anyone else about who has these set-ups... just being nosey to be honest!!!

Cheers,

S

Dont keep them myself, but I would be very interested to hear more about your setup and species if possible. Any chance or a couple of pics?

Im sure i have some pics about somewhere... will post them soon!! i have a 100 gallon tank with an internal powerhead filter (1000 LPH) and an external canister filter (150LPT) that alos runs down through bio-balls before entering the external filter. there's a good few tufa rocks in the tank to keep the PH high (around 8.2/8.3) and the substrate i just standard aquarium sand.

At the minute, i dont have that many fish in this tak, as it was only set up about a month ago, and i haven't bought any new fish for quite some time. but at the minuter i have 2 red scats and one silver scat, all about 3 inches long, a shark cat, about the same length, a really nice archer, and a few silver sailfin mollies.

im hoping to get a few of the slightly more unusual species soon, such as freswater flounder, and a few other's, but i think ill have to pop in ang get these specially ordered in for me!

The archer is great looking, it nice to see something different once in a while. I'm sure you get this all the time when asked about the archer, but have you tried to get it to spit at things?

Was in a public aquarium last year(either london or Copenhagen)and they had a nice brackish "pool",with many archers, feeding time was interesting with lots of spitting at hand held food, but there was 1 archer that had only 1 eye. They line up their prey taking into account the angles of looking out of water, and can and will jump at it.However this 1 eyed chap couldnt quite get it right and was rather amusing to watch leaping way off target.
OK,I guess it was a bit sad for the poor blighter, but 1 or 2 of us slightly more deluded people in the crowd had a giggle.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Yep it looks like your the only one. But dont be afraid to inform us on brackish fish. You may be able to convert someone to brackish.
The knight Goby you got was it a good sized female with excellent markings.

Hi Sparky,

I think daztogue on the forum has a brackish set up or at least he was planning to set one up. I just had a look on the net and found a nice tank that might give you a few ideas. Check out the links:

not yet, their on the list to get tho, but have to look into their compatability with the rest of their future tank-mates! but i think after i get the mangrove into the tank, and get some other areas for the mud-skippers, ill have to get some! their so damm ugly, but at the same time, with a face like that, who couldn't love em!!!

you'll need some sandbank where they can park their backsides for a while. They also can hop onto Mangrove roots

i was thinking about putting a turtle dock or something like that in for that, as the tank is quite deep, and putting in a sand bank would probably cost a small fortune, and end up with me looking half the capacity of the tank! ah, think ill have to look a little further into it! but as i said, my main concern would be if they try to go for the mono's, or my night goby, as their not that big, yet!
