Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just a few questions about positioning LR. What way do most people use for the best affect ie acrylic rods , expoy, or the reef racks.

also just what to ask most people about there views in the way i will be filtering if its a bit much dont hesitate to tell me.
in order.
(LR and sprinking of coral sand)

1 UV sterilizer
2 Trickle filter
3 protein skimmer
4 nitrate reactor.
may add a refugium later on.

hi tetra,
ive used epoxy for aquascaping and found it great, will try to post a pucsture in the next day or so. ive no experiene using the other too but it doesnt sound like it would look too natural.

re: filtration.....different people use different methods. Live rock is sufficient on its own provided you dont overstock your tank. its what i use in my set up and is really beautiful aswell. id advise reading a book before u take the plunge ...the conscientious marine aquarist is excellent and explains all the different filtration set ups u can have and the pros and cons of each.

re your choice of filtration....just my opinion

1. uv steriliser...waste of money.
2. trickle filters.... can lead to bottle necking of nitrates (fr jack said he has a way of modifying them to avoid this)
3. protein skimmer.... good idea when u see the concentrated gunk they remove
4. nitrate reactor...completely not necessary really unless you are over feeding, overstocking, and/or overfiltering (ie trickle)

it all depends on what way u want to go. how many fish you plan to add etc. a refug is a good idea. a Quarantine tank is also really a MUST because you cant medicate a tank with live rock.

hope this helps.

fran

iv read several books now its just decieding which filteration to use I am going to use a 60L sump so will have plenty of room i taught with the nitrate reactor that this would stop the high nitrates of the trickle filter.

what filteration are you using lampeye
cheers for the reply

Lampeye, this like advising some one in the fresh water forum to have a planted tank with few fish with an air stone and carbon filter, both system work with very few fish and load of fresh water plants, why cant he put deep live sand in the sump to stop the NO3 build up?

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

fr jack,
its nothing like advising someone to do that. in fact if you read my post the only time i "advise" him is when i say to read a book and give the name of one that explains all the methods of filtration and their pros and cons.
i have no experience with sumps or refug, and have not reseached them but i dont see why he couldnt do that (deep sand bed).
re: my system i was just answering his question on what filtration i was using.

No problem lampeye, no offence taken I was only acting in tera´s best interest so he might have the best system for a fish system with possible some inverts to, your system is fine for live rock and a very low bio load, I can see how your deep sand bed keeps NO3 low now, its just an ice cream container with fine sand dropped into a sump could also do that and when the electric goes off the trickle filter continue to "breath" and never "robs the available O2, from the dissolved water leave it all for the inhabitants.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

its true a power cut scares the shit out if me! and re stocking i prefer a few small fish with loads of room than an overstocked tank.

its a case of information gathering from books and people s experiences and making a decision based on that so its good you've added a voice to this thread..... more than one way to skin a cat etc!
