Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey Guys,

My tank is being overrun with snails at the moment, everyday we do take as many snails as we see but there just seems to be no end to them.

I bought 3 assassin snails hoping that would sort the problem out but they dont seem to be doing anything.

Can anyone else recommend some treatment to getting rid of these please??

Cheers,

Joe

Pop in some cucumber and turn off the lights, after a while you will see lots feeding on the veg, remove, chuck in the Garden then repeat , you will drastically reduce the numbers enabling the Assassins to do their Job.

One of my tanks has a problem with snails at the minute.

What I am doing, is switching the lights off for say half hour in the evening when I get home from work and then switching back on and dealing with the snails that are out at that stage.

Its a slow process but over a week or so of doing this, I've noticed that the number and indeed the size of the snail that I'm having to deal with are reducing.

i do feed my snails to some of my fish now but before i had clown loach to keep the problem away which they did with great efficiency (their also community safe) but previous to that when i 1st started out i used lettuce leaves to collect the snails as kev recommended... worked great and your assassins will then keep new snails to a min until their gone.

they could be accumulating in your filter also.... i had the jewel box filter in my 1st tank and had to take the filter media out and put in a clown loach to eat the snails in there...

Im with Kev on this one, create some form of a trap / food incentive for them to go towards, pick it out and start again. It wont take long to reduce the numbers. Also you should get a few more assassins, they dont populate too much and will start to reduce the snail numbers in no time at all,you just have to help them out abit too with it!

They are active Day and night but only at night are they willing to leave the surface in large numbers, it is at this time they are easily caught.

Just hold out until your assassin snails start breeding. After that you wont have any worries. If not try a puffer fish that is if it'd be suitable

as above posters have said, trap them, my own method is to get a good sized pill box or similar, drill a good few holes in it, big enough for the snails to enter but too small for the fish to go in, put some veg and fish food in it and drop it in the tank, oh and tie it to a string so you can haul it out and not have to put your hand in the tank, empty and refill with bait. A mineral bottle will work either.
My biggest tip for reducing or preventing a big snail population explosion is do not over feed your tank, reduce the feeding (your fish and water quality will also thank you) and when doing your water changes syphon any visible detrius out.

I would avoid buying fish eating species, loaches, puffers etc to deal with the problem unless you had intended to add this species to the tank anyway
