Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After a long stint out of the hobby Im going to return via the salty route. Ive kept marines in the past, puffers, triggers and morays but this time Im planning a reef setup. If anyone has experience with some of the new lighting, skimming, sump layouts and anything else equipment wise please let your thoughts be known. Im in the very early planning stage but have settled on a tank. The space where I kept my big tanks has been usurped and Im left with 3' to play with so leaning heavily towards the 24"x24"x26" Clearseal with sump. Main display is 245ltr but unsure of sump capacity, if anyone knows this be sure to let me know ;) . I know is not huge but Im pretty confident I can pull this off without killing anything but any info or handy links will be much appreciated. Oh, and yes John, I plan to document this as best I can and post updates and what not. Hope the forum is still fun and informative as it has been in the past, looking foward to chatting with you all.

Jay,
Glad you're back with us.
It will be really good to see how your fare with this project (the closest I ever got to a marine set-up has been to hatch brine shrimp).

On you go, then.

Good to hear mate well done

That will be a grand size tank

What sort off reef you going with Softie,LPS,SPS? This will all come down to what sort off lighting you want as in LED's T5s and so on and also flow is a big thing but again need to know first what reef you are going for

As for skimmer its only best to get the biggest one you can pay for

As for sump are you going to go with a REFUGIUM and use pellets or the likes off NOPOX you will have to think about all this before you go buying anything mate

What sort off dosing will you be doing?

Best off luck with it and ill be watching this closely and will try help out as much as i can mate

Thanks Sean,

Its a case of t5's vs led's at the moment in the lighting category. I like the led's as they appear to be versatile, but dont like the price. That said, by all accounts they pay for themselves in the long run power wise and I like the idea of not having to worry about swapping bulbs etc for a while. The t5 units are far cheaper though and tempting to go for given the damage the rest of the setup is going to do to the wallet. Very tough call...but Im leaning towards led"s. As far as corals go Im thinking mostly softies and mabey one or two hardier LPS/SPS but I need to crack the books on them a little more before I come up with a possible list. Total noob with corals though so all advice welcome there too. Been reading up on refugiums, and am currently neck deep in contradictions but nothing new there. There is a lot of different media out there, and this is the first time Ive run a sump do I need to get my head around using media in a stup like that. As far as dosing goes, I was going to keep things simple and rely on the salt mixes to replace trace elements as part of a routine water change regime. I do plan to keep iodine and calcium on hand though.
