Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Marine tanks can cost as much or as little as you like to maintain and setup

bigger the tank the easier the maintainence but also the more expensive due to water changes and testing etc
(Larger bodies of water will take longer to foul than smaller)
Factor in the cost of rock (dry rock is cheaper but takes longer to cycle), live sand and coral sand, lights filters (and filter maintenance) clean up crew Lights (fish or full reef have different requirements lighting wise) and other equipment that will be required

Soooo many variables to be honest its hard to give an actual figure on keeping one

Ive put mine on hold again cause money has gone tight
but i will set one up this year

hammie is spot on

if you want my opinion!! stay away from small marine tanks their only for experts as in really knowing your stuff, so much happens in a small tank that you will get away with in a bigger tank

not trying to steer you away from it but more trying to save you wasted money and the attitude of a marine tank is a load of bol?@S, cause when its done right its the most rewarding project you will take on, in keeping a box of water full of life

its said that 30gallon is minimum

i now know this is good advice seeing how my bigger tank is more easier to look after

(but far more expensive) to set up (unfortunately)

I'm setting up a 100l marine tank at the minute here is a list of what I have got so far.

Tank aquanano 60

Sera external filter, this has a built in uv filter
€130

Depending on what you plan on keeping a protein skimmer €120

Aquaray aquabeam twin led. New they are about €220 got them on here for less.

Live rock usually €15 per kg I'll be using 8-10 kg so another €120 to €150.

Live sand I'll get 10kg which is €30

Then your test kits, allow another €100 depending on what kits etc you get.

Then you have you bits and Bob's refractometer, filter media, salt etc add another €150

You can mix your own water but you can buy it from shops for a few euro for 25l.

This is all based on a 100l tank. You can quickly put a lot of money in before you even buy a single fish.

Hey djc

I have recently set up a marine tank. 136l fluval m90. It's currently costs 599 on offer usually 699 and comes with skimmer heater led lights and return pump for that price.

I have put 15kgs of live rock 10kgs of live sand and the total setup including water from Lfs to fill and 2 20% water changes, cleanup crew, a few small corals and deposit on a pair of perculas is around the 1200 euro mark.

just as an idea of costs of getting one up and running.
