Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have to agree. They put a lot of work into the shop over the past few months and it's looking great. They've really beefed up the marine section. I've also got the marine itch!

Regards,

Ken.

I used to have chiclids about 4 years ago and loved them. But when moving house had to shut tank down. Then last year i started again but this time spent the money on marines. It's a great hobbie. The colours, the change in the tank from day to day. The variety of corals fish ect. When you see the display tank you can see what you can achieve. It inspires you to learn more and create a similar tank

And if its the tank that I'm thinking about I believe that it was made and fish added in one day!! :)

Great achievement...but sure they didn't have to go far for the live rock!!

O just a question, when you buy the cured live rock from say aquatic village (its the only place I know that sells it!!) and you put it into your marine tank will you have a die off..even when it is cured and you get it into your tank within one hour?

From my experience with live rock I found it amazing it can withstand alot my heater broke for two days and it still filtered the water with barely any die off as far as i know. I also Had my live rock out of water (but kept moist) for 10 hours and it still remanded live. When buying live rock at the start I find you get very panicey and worry about getting it home (mostly because of the crazy price for the rock) but realisticly keep it moist and it will survive for a long while after all that is how it is transported over here oh and there will always be die off but dont worry its tuff rock and its quite hard to kill off.
Just my opinion though.

live rock is shipped in boxes from the likes of fiji with out water, it would add extra weight to the boxes therefore more expensive again

its tough stuff, always seems to come back, even normal dead reef rock will be come live over time but its not as porous and soft as the ordinary stuff so it doesnt look the same

the die off we all worry about it die off of nitrifiing bacteria, so if u have lovely fresh smelling live rock in the shop it will still be fresh and smelling nice by the time u get it home, but depending on the time it was out of the water and that the nitrifing bacteria could DIE OFF and the same rock wouldnt be able to support a tanks nitrogen cycle, just yet any way,

thats why we stock the tank really really slowly, i think its the exact same as with a fresh water tank, only we dont use the filters to do the bio work for us

kiss my fishy AS S
