My tank has crashed.
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After enjoying over a months bliss my tank has crashed.
I took some free live(dead) rock from a marine tank, washed and scolded it and addded it to my tank.
All my corals closed and I lost a couple of them.
My nitrate swet through the roof and I got an Ammonia spike.
Thanks to Keiron for testing my water.
The rocks were leaking nitrates back in to the water and what ever
was inside caused an Ammonia spike.
I taught by washing and boiling them they would be ok.
They were even outside for a few days.
I have made a big boo boo against certain peoples advice (Paulm)
and I feel like a tit. The fact is I am not practising what I preach. I have done water changes and the parameters are back in check.
This is a warning to people starting up a marne tank.
Don`t tempt faith. Take your time and do it right from the start.
The margin of error id very small.
I only lost 2 fish but seeing as I only had 6 this is one third of my fish.

Is that since we were down with you Anto?
That explains why the corals were all closed up.
Impatience is the main killer of fishy things it seems.
I'm just as bad.

I have done this before adding dead/live rock to a tank.
At the time all i had was 2 pieces of live rock in a 2' tank with an internal filter.
Lucky enough i had no live stock in the tank since i was only tying with the idea of marines at the time.
The result was the same high Amonia,Nitrite and Nitrates.
After a couple of large water changes and a week or so later all parameters were back on track.
The only thing i wasn't prepared for was the tank crashed again about 2 weeks later.
I wasn't doing anything different with the tank so i can only assume the second crash was from the dead rock.
This rock is now part of my base rock.

I removed all the Ocean rock yesterday and restarted my tank.
It looks a bit empty but hopefully it will be done right from now on. I have to practice what I preach.

ITs definitly a good thing to make sure your new rock is fully cured before adding to the tank. I generally cure mine for 2mnths in a tub at the lfs I help at. I have done this at home and it work very well.
I still dread the day I might have a crash in my tank. I have seen so many peoples tanks crash because of a small mistake, or some that have crashed for no apparent reason.

Hi Gary.
I was warned not to chance this rock so I am an idiot for not
taking advice. I don`t need that much rock now. I recon 3 more
large piecec and the tank will be full.
I intend to buy fully cured rock but as you know their is
always some die off so 1 peice every 2-3 weeks will have to do.
I only have 2 fish in the tank and the parameters are fine now.
