Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Marine Algae... was created by conor (conor)
Hi all,

I have some differnt coloured algae in the tank. Some really nice red algae, some very bright green stuff, and the usual brown crap.

Anyone know what it might be? Again, I'll take pics.

Is the algae a type of hair algae, or is it slick? If you touch it does it come loose and flow with the current in the tank?

Well, turns out that the only algae I have left is lovely coraline.
All the cyano is gone, as is the brown stuff.

After research it turned out to be a case of new tank syndrome - basically it took three months to fully stabilise, no something I was accustomed to as its my first marine tank.

All going lovely now, water is perfect and added my first coral yesterday :P

God I wish I could remember! I will compile a list and post it, hopefully on Saturday.

Things are really on the way up, coral is looking great, figured out that the only way to clean the glass is with a razor blade (stanley blade), I previously tried using mag floats and other such things. None worked successfully.

Aptasia is now gone! Thank God, so I will get some epoxy resin and stack the LR up and then glue the SPS so they can get decent growth!

I've registered www.reefkeeping.eu and will start putting content up (actual new pics!!!) The ones up @ the mo are all Old and crap.

I'm also installing a ReefCam, will post it soon. Oh I love my Marine tank!
I set up a NANO reef for my daughter. But its still cycling the LR so will add nothing except worms and other small inverts to get the "eco" system going.

Sounds good! Have you seen the razors that attatch to your mag floats? They work extremely well, but you need to take it out of the water when you are done, the blade will rust, unless you order the stainless blades. Try this link it should take you to it. Go down to the bottom of the page. www.aquatichouse.com/Maintenance_files/MagFloat.asp

Thats deadly! Must get one of those - thanks my friend!

I decided to try another manufacturer for phosphate removal - so I bought some Fluval lab series phosphate remover.

I started off with a water change -> 15% (because it has been 5 weeks since the last one - oops)

I then changed added a small quantity (much less than I usualy add with the other product). Within the first few days, I noticed a serious fall in the algae on the back walls. -> there never is any on the LR or the substrate - just the glass.

Anyway, give it a try, never believe the hype when manufacturers state that their works the best, I found quite the opposite!

I have been using phosban without a reactor with pretty good success, only problem is you have to be careful and not let the dust get into the tank.

Same for Fluval's product. However, they provide it in granular form - hich I simply washed under the tap in the sink.

I rince the carbon in exactly the same way - so thats not an issue.

Rowaphos (the previous product) claims to work for a month for twice the water volume, did not _seem_ to perform as well as I hoped.

None of the above is in any way scientific, especially since the tank was
new(ish).

All I have to go on is the fact that almost all the algae has disappeared!
I really should take new pics coz its looking well better! :D Yeah!
