Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi...I bought a 30L nano/pico reef tank and im just wondering if anyone has any advice for me regarding setup..i've no experience at all with marine's so any tips would be appreciated. what corals are suitable for this size tank? i really want it to be colourful..not too interested in the fish side!! also how much do corals cost? i've no idea!!

what i have at the moment is..Tank,Niagra 250 Hang on filter & 18 Watt Solaris Compact Flourescent Lighting Unit..
Im not sure exactly what else i need...if there's anything missing please let me know.

1. Live Rock 2-3Kg
2. Live sand.
3. Water!

I have to buy a heater, not sure which to buy, 25w or 50w? Im thinking 25w.
Would i need a koralia nano powerhead? What do they actually do?

HAve the 45 breadbin version, you need more flow and 25W should be able the light will heat tank enough during day.

I got a small internal filter for flow and also meant I could pop in phosban(remove phosphate) and or carbon (Removes crap) or polyfilter that removes most stuff you dont want.

I would be careful with water dropping and make sure you have a few litre of RO water to top up.

I went bare bottom no sand as sand does'nt really work in nano tanks except for a tiny amount for looks.

Apart from that just fill it put the lights on 8 hours timer and wait a month, 1st week nothing much will happen then the algae will appear in differnet versions, a few weeks later all should get stable and away you go.

thanks for the reply newrossman..would you be able to post a pic of your setup? i dont know whether to buy an small internal filter or just use the mini skimmer that comes with it. the guy i bought it from said i could fill all the skimmer compartments with carbon/zeolite mix and a sponge filter..and it'll be fine..will this skimmer flow provide enough oxygen to the water though? i didnt really plan on buying a nano powerhead but if it has to be done...

I'll see if I got a oic, but skimmer for small tanks are questionable, water changes of about 5 litres a week is better, i use those 4 liter water bottle, only 5 mins to do the change and your set for the week.
Just go for softy coral but LPS should be ok with 18 watt light, 1 fish and a small one.
