Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Enough Circulation??

Hey All,

Well, I finally bought my own home, so now i have it, i can finally get my marine tank up and running! I have more or less all the information i need, and know what to do, but I'm not too sure if i have enough of a turnover in the tank. my tank is 360 liters, with a sump that is the same size, so i will have 720 liters in total. I have two return pumps from my sump, both ocean runner 2500's, and i have two 5000lph power heads, and a dual 12000lph power head. So, do i need to add get some more turnover in the tank, or will this be enough? it works out at around 30 times the total volume of the tank every hour.

thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,
Congratulations for your home:)
30 times an hour the volume of your tank seems absolutely fine to me.
As i haven't kept marine in a while,i could be a little rusty:blink: but i'm sure the
current marine keepers will tell you a bit more!
what's your plan?..,fish only,reef(soft coral,hard coral?)?
all the best.

Hey Dimitri,

Thanks for the quick response. Well, the front room is in need of a bit of decorating, so the wife wants that done first! i hope to keep fist, reef and start out with some hard corals. once i have a bit more experience with it, i'll try some more difficult corals!

I've kept marines, and brackish fish for a few years now, well, no tanks running for the past year  It made it easier to save for the house! Anyway, looking forward to the new challenge, and the results!!

Hi James,

Not too sure what corals i will be keeping just yet to be honest! Have to get the sitting room decorated before i put the tanks in place! the tanks are rectangular... They actually came from Whatckers in Parnell St, they used to be down the back, and were at one stage a long time agon used for marine setups, and planted setups... I have some photos of the main tank from when I had it set up as a Brackist tank, will have to try and find them!

Cool one of the trigon range.

Circulation can be a bit of a bummer in that tank as if you can imagen looking down. the best place for the live rock is right in the middle of the tank and to place the power heads one on the left and right of the bow pointing back to the back of the tank pointing up for surface movement and on at the back to break up the two currents at the front of the tank. In a normal shape tank you would get away with two powerheads :(

This keeps the rock in good condition and allows for no Detritus to settle.

The power of the pumps then depends on the size of the tank and the type of coral.

Hope this helps.

Hi - think you read 'rectangular' as 'triangular' - the trigon is a corner tank which you're thinking of.

Sounds like good advice though

Nope, not a trigon! it was a custom made tank. I have attached a few photos of the tank from when it was set up before. Thanks for all the advice guys, i'm sure it will come in very helpful, if i ever get the front room finished that is!!!
