Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Noisy sump/overflow!!!! NEED HELP!!!

Hi.
I've started to set up my new bigger marine tank, Betta Lifespace 1000.
I have filled the tank with RO water, turned return pump on,and nearly got kick out of my house for the amount of noise that the tank is making!!!!
I have tried Durso pipe and this kinda reduced the noise in the overflow box,but the noise of water entering the sump is still insane!!!

Any idea how can that be fixed? does anybody have silent tank with sump?

my tank is in sitting room nxt to the tv so at the moment i had to turn the return pump off!!!and wait to put the salt in.

Regards

Maciek

have the same tank myself, did you use the pipework that came with the tank???

i would ditch the durso and go with a twin standpipe setup in the weir, the twin standpipe is far superior method than a durso in my opnion and much quieter, i cannot hear a sound from my weir.

Are the main flow and emgerency flow pipes in the sump below the waterlevel, if not this is going to create a lot of noise, put them below the sump water height and this to should also run perfectly quiet.

The only noise i can near from my tank is the skimmer which is the slightly hum sound that you would hardly notice as my tank is in the sitting room aswell, and the wife (aka the Boss)
only demand on this new setup was no noise;) .

Hi Jeff!
Yes, i did use the pipes that came with the tank.
pipes in the sump are below the water level at the moment.
can you tell me how high is the shorter pipe? how high is the longer pipe, how far away from the top of the wier does it start?
do you have any pictures?

sorry for all those questions ;)

Thanks

Well with the pipework in the sump below water level that should run silent.

In the weir you have 3 pipes, the one on the right hand side is the return pipe so that leaves 2 pipes.

I used the pipe on the left hand side as the main feed pipe into my sump from the main tank, or to make it easier the one with the ball value. In the weir section i have a pipe about half way up. You can get away without a pipe in the weir but just be carful and ensure that your sump can handle the full contents of your weir if there is a power loss.

The middle pipe i used as the emergency overflow pipe, i have this about 1" below the weir.

The trick is to use the ball valve to set the water height in your weir till you get a small trickle of water to flow over the middle pipe. it takes a bit of jigging of the ball valve to get it set right but if done correct it will run silent.
The height of this middle pipe will also dictate the water level in the main tank aswell but if you set it at about 12 below the weir it should be fine.

So in the end you should have nearly all the water coming down the pipe with the ball valve and a small trickle coming down the middle pipe.

Hope this help if not i can give you my phone number, might be easier to explain over the phone. Let us know how you get on

Best of luck

Great Stuff!!!!
Did all that, tank is silent now!!!the only noise i can hear now is the return pump thats slightly loudish ;/
i've use durso pipe at the top of the longer pipe, and that made id quieter too.(i was too lazy last nite to be sanding the end of the long pipe(as i read in you IFF site post).
I was thinking bout putting the long pipe kinda high, so the water level in the tank can be bit higher,so i can get read of that ENOYING BLINDING GAP between the water level and the top rim ;)
thank for all the help.
