Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The perils of water and electricity

The perils of water and electricity was created by 2poc (2poc)
I had a near miss with my marine tank recently.

I had rearranged rockwork and headed off out. Whatever I had done with the rockwork caused my hang on back skimmer to overflow. Directly onto a gang board with about a dozen plugs in it!

Thankfully, before anything went on fire the power tripped. I got home shortly after to the the house alarm going off, a strong smell of smoke, no electricity and wife + child in a state of panic.

I'll admit that the position of the plugs wasn't the best, they were raised up to create a drip loop in the cables but I didn't factor on water coming directly from the back of the tank or skimmer.

I just havent the heart for it anymore and decided to break down the tank. All stock in the marine tank is getting traded in at the weekend - some beautiful fish and corals but I don't have the time to sell them seperately...

The lesson learned is to not take any chances with electricity and water. So if you have one of those tanks with a million plugs in the cabinet underneath now is the time to sort it out rather than wait for something bad to happen!

On the plus side for anyone thinking of going marine, I will be getting rid of a job lot of marine additives/potions as well as a Deltec MCE 600 skimmer.

This is a bit of an eye opener to me. Obviously I'm aware of the fact that water and electricity don't mix, but I hadn't realised the extent of the possible damage. I'd just thought it would short and the fuse would blow and I'd lose what was in the tank, not that my house could potentially go on fire. Glad this didn't end too badly.

That was close - my sympathies go to your wife who must have been terrified.

The only thing I can offer by way of a very poor "consolation" is that no physical harm occurred, but that's hardly consolation at all.

There's a lesson here for each and every one of us but I hope it doesn't permanently turn you off Fishkeeping and that you'll still log in and contribute to the Forum.

Sry to hear bout the tank!:(! at least every1 was ok in house!

Yeah... all my plugs are very safe since i electrocuted myself  ^^ my arms were wet from cleaning the tank and i went to get sumthing out of the press underneath, the plugs were in there. next thing im on the floor where i stayed for a few mins!

My pipe leaked after i moved the plugs. If i wasnt electrocuted id prob be in same position as 2poc

Thats a shame you are getting out of the hobby, hopefully only for a while and you will return to it. I can see where your concerns are though and its a lesson to us all to double check everything no matter how remote the chances are of something happening. As you say, fish are great and all but there are far bigger consquences of a mishap like that. Thankfully you are all safe, but fair play for posting and reminding us that we need to keep an eye on things like this. Hope you will be back to the hobby in a short while at least in some capacity.

the lesson learned here is a good one for everyone to hear.thanks for sharing and sorry for the loss. we should have safety sub forum! on this note I'd also urge everyone to plug out everything from the mains when you have your hands in a tank doing any work. I've have a few near misses with electroshock therapy over the years.my hair is funny for a reason.

do the safety dance.

dont make me come over there.

Thanks for the comments lads.

I'm not leaving the hobby completely - still have 4 freshwater tanks running to keep me busy ;)

As Gavin says - do the safety dance is right
