Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Quiet External Canister Filter?

I have just set up a 120litre interpet fishpod in my room. It came with an internal PF3 filter and it is a little on the loud side. I can deal with the hum at the moment, but in the long run I think it might eventually drive me crazy.

I've heard that canister filters are much quieter and that the Rena Filstar X1 is "whisper quiet" and that people actually have to check that its running because it so quiet. Does anyone have experience with this filter, and if so where did they buy it? If not, could you recommend a decent, quiet filter and where they bought it please?

George

Hey George, welcome to the forum. I think that these days that most of the names you recognise - Eheim, Fluval, Tetratec etc all do externals that are quiet. I don't think people accept a noisy external any more! :) I have a Fluval 305 and can't hear it at all in my apartment sitting room. I know that a lot of people consider Eheim to be the best in terms of quality but they are a bit more expensive (but most people seem to think its worth it!). As far as I know (could be very wrong on this!) Rena are an American brand or are called something else over here because I have never seen them over here and have really only heard about them on American forums.

Hope this helps, someone else might be able to shine more light on the subject.

I had a Lido 120, I used a Fluval 105, no noise, worked a dream.

Thanks for your replies. I found a Eheim 2211 Classic on a german website for €38. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Hi there, I use Fluval FX5. very good filter. can't compare the sound. I can hear it, but not too loud.
My idea is maybe you could try to clean the propeller shaft and all movable parts in the motor. that might help a treat.
