Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hey guys, my 9ft tank project is still on going. ive the sump divided now and want to ask ye all whats the best size pump to use for return. im thinking either one 5000lph or 2 3000lph return pumps, im leaning more for 2 pumps in case one fails. its a 300l sump for a 1100l tank with large cat fish and ocsars. also what pumps have ye had experience with and whats the best out there. i will post pics when its all up and running

I've been recommended to get the Eheim compact 5000 pump for a similar sized tank.

Haven't gotten it yet though so haven't tested it.

thanks alan, i also am thinking of the 5000compact but did u ever think of mayb using 2 pumps like eheim 3000, even combined it will cost more to run.there are many pumps on the market, we all want the one that will never break down, run silent and cost pennys to run.any other keepers have good or bad pumps they can comment about them.

I was looking at some return pumps for a project that's "pending for approval" by the boss  and found this pump:
translate.google.com/translate?sourceid=...it-Pumpenstativ.html
At 5000l/h and only 40W looks like a winner for me. On top of that being german made, carries some clout regarding robustness.

ive just looked up the pump u said, its a pond pump with a heavy price at 144 euro plus 19% tax and shipping, not cheap for 5000lph. ive just bought a 3000lph h2ocean pump from SH for 70euro with 55w motor, i intend buying a second one asap. i know its the more expensive option regarding power with 110w for 6000l total flow in my sump but im thinking 2 pumps is better than one incase one goes down on me, and ill have 2 return pipes to the tank, one just under the water line, the other ill run though a splash bar to help water movement.ive looked at pond pumps and dont think they are suitable for a sump as they are big and produce lots of heat and most sumps dont need 3 plus meters head power.may i suggest m4 to think again before u fork out your hard cash for a pond pump to look at a sump pump, horses for coures as they say. thanks for your comment on the topic, i appreciate any feed back from ye guys and its only by chating to others thay us guppys can learn.best of luck with your pending project . lets know what u decide on.

anybody know how to calculate the rate of flow from a weir box into the sump, ive 2 2inch outlets, ive done some calculations online and came up with over 8500lph flow from my tank to the sump.if im right then two 3000lph return pumps will never keep up aghhhhhhhhhhhh, valves on the outlet pipes will slow down the flow.mayb 8000lph is better for the return rate, help needed, i dont know what im doing

No worries mate! I was just "casually" browsing for pumps and saw that one. As for your 2 pumps at 110W, they will add to the leccy bill in no time, I'd rather have a spare one on stand by just in case the primary one goes belly up.

I purchased a BLAU 3000Lph overflow box for my marine setup 5 foot 380L tank.
The return pump is a 3000lph h2ocean pump .The return pump is adjustable .I may have to reduce the return flow so that is slightly less then the overflow box rate.

I have yet to fill the tank and get the hardware running.
Collecting my sump tomorrow at Seahorse.

hi greg, the golden nugget is doin fine for me :cheer: .the blau box is a great idea just hangs on the side of the tank. ive 2 weir boxes each measure 10x7x24 inches with a 2inch out pipe.what im lost with is what is the flow rate out of my tank into the sump as this will determine the size of return pump ill need.i did some simple calculations and got 8500lph from each weir.thats running the out pipe at full bore.its a 1200l tank with 300l sump so most ill need is 5000lph out flow.ive just bought the h2ocean 3000 from SH yesterday and was going run 2 of these but as M4 said the elect bill will rise high :-(( . i think i better think it out again  .best of luck with the new tank lov to see pics in time.

Your sump at 300L is close to my main 5 foot tank capacity which is 380L
Best of luck.
