Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just wondering if anyone uses a Fluval 205 Cannister filter? I've checked the internet forums and it always suggested that Vaseline Petrolium Jelly is a good water sealant to stop leaks sa cover? I had a small leak before but it became worst when I removed the O-ring and washed it with tap. Is Vaseline petrolium jelly safe for the water and will it not "break" the O-ring? Any advices?

Did you mean a new O-ring? Or just replace with a new external filter?

Yep, New O ring, been there before as well! Even tough it might look fine!!!

I find when putting the top back on the fluval canisters, it is best to push it back on manually and with a good bit of pressure evenly all round, pressing down on the top motor part, this gives a good closing seal, then gently close the clips.

Ok thanks folks! I will purchase one on ebay and see how it goes. I assume I put the new O ring as is - no other additives or sealants right?

When i got a new ring after mine was leaking, it continued to leak for a day or so until the ring "seasoned" i did use a very small amount of Vaseline which is harmless and that did seem to help with the new ring. I left the canister full to the brim with water, with lid on, on the kitchen counter top for a couple of days and it was fine. Hopefully you will be able to just stick it on and not have to go through these additional steps!

Is using "Vaseline" Petroleum Jelly really safe for the O Ring rubber as a exterbal filter sealant overall? SOmeone I know adviced me to not ever use vaseline for your gasket sealer. vaseline is made from petroleum and petroleum damages rubber, vinyl and the like. The "Vaseline" being referred to web forums used for Eheims refers to a different thing. it refers to plumbers grease which is made from silicone. He used vaseline petroleum jelly before in his Eheim and teh gasket did not last long. He recommends use of silicone grease the non toxic kind or you can use tire black which is silicone grease just make sure its non toxic. search on google about what petroleum does to rubber. Do you know of any brand we have here in Dublin for a non-toxic Silicone (Plumber's) Grease?

ian o rings come in a bag with sealants on them already but make sure no grit or dust gets on it i believe it can damage them aswell just make sure u clean around the area where the o ring goes to get all dust and grit before u replace the ring

FInally bought a new original Fluval 205 replacement O ring it arrived and I finally installed its doing fantastic so far. The part had some thin clear grease and it worked perfectly! After more than 6 months without any external filtration finally its holding up well again. Thanks all!
