Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've acquired myself a second hand 405,
And have it running at the minute!
Can anyone tell me the best way to fill the media baskets
From the bottom up?
Not sure weather to have bio balls in the first basket
And then ceramics after?
And then cleaning, how 'often would you clean it,
2 weeks? 4 weeks?
Cheers!

I have mine: Bio balls,peat,ceramic......hmmmm or is that the other way round? hmmmmm
Anyway every time i clean it out i can never remember which way to put them back in the way i had them, but never had an issue of any sort in saying that.
As always, stocking and the like can dictate when to clean it but i have it on a 'moderately' stocked tank and i'd only need to clean it every 8-10 weeks.

Thanks ger,
How many trays for bio balls?
2? And 1 ceramic and 1 peat?
Also do you use filter floss if so where?

Yip that's it....2 bio balls,1 ceramic and 1 peat.
I've never used filter floss in an external so i'm no good to yeh there.
I have used a couple of Eheim externals that were really really good but this Fluval is the best i've used so far dude.

Mech filtration like ceramic noodles generally goes at the bottom to catch larger dirt then bio and floss or the finest sponge goes at the top to catch the finest particles. Not familiar with 405 specifically though.

Hope this helps

Cheers I think I have it figured out,
There's 4 large sponges for mechanical first
Then a tray of bio balls on the bottom tray,
Then 2 trays of ceramic balls and finally a tray
Of filter floss for polishing the water on the way out.

Polishing that's the word I was looking for, shouldn't be much to polish by the time it gets to floss you would think.

I'm using it maybe 18 months now and never had a problem with fine particles in the water,so never felt the need for floss.
