Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a clean, with an old toothbrush. Can't see if its broken, but seems to be in one piece.
You can also give its housing a wipe. with a small bottle brush, that will bring the flow rates back up.
No harm to clean the hoses/pipework while you are at it.

Should the white plastic bit be a round hole?

No, the split is on most impellers, I suspect it's a design thing

The center hole should fit the guide pin with little or no wiggle room. if it has become worn and gone an oval shape you probably should change it, you will know when its worn because the impeller wont spin on center and you will hear it knocking about inside once you turn on the filter. But your one just looks like it needs a good clean.

Looks fine to me,
I clean these once every two weeks
I had a fluval u3 that used to stick when I turned it
On,
So I had to take it back out give it a nudge to get it going again
Then stick it back in the tank,
Turns out it just needed a good clean,
Also clean the slot it goes in to,
I'm nearly sure the gunk that accumulates in the
Propeller and the slot effects the magnets.

It is running quieter since it got a clean. I have no idea how old this is as I bought it second hand without asking

Thx for the advice I will give it a clean more regularly now that I have done it once.

Another question should the seals on the taps be given a bit o Vaseline? I did the main seal but didn't do the taps.

You should use silicone grease for the seals.
Vaseline will deteriorate the seals even though it helps with the sealing
initially.
The inner part of the impeller is ceramic and will erode over time.
If your getting loud or unusual noises when in use then there most likely worn.
Always clean and check correct fitting first though.

Cheers

Where do you get your grease? Any brand I should look for?

Is the silicone grease for the impeller and shaft also?

Silicone grease is for the ruber seals.
It seems to be hard to get.
I found alot of parts for different applications recommend it,
But dont supply it with the part for fitting.
I last got it in a place called Heatovent owned by Chadwicks.
Otherwise try online?

From my experiences refiting an impeller, you can over tighten the retaining clip, housing and the impeller wont turn, I did that on a return pump, once I found out why it did not work after cleaning I eased it back half a mil.just be aware of the tightness of the impeller housing.
