Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey guys, my one year old jbl e900 is leaking... I took it apart to try find the source with no luck... I cleaned the o-ring (still could be the problem though), made sure all the baskets were level and sitting properly but it's still sitting in a pool of water....

Any advice?

Cheers
Niall

Stick it in a bucket and run it!
You might see where the leak is coming from

Sounds like a worn seal to me tho

Thanks hammie, yeah I put it in a bucket with tissue paper under it to try find where the leak was coming from... But the water marks were in different places each time...

I think your right and it's the seal to the motor head... No idea where to get a new one thou

Return it. It should still be under warranty. I wouldn't mess around with a leaking external if I didn't have to. Keep the media and it should be a straightforward swap. Typically, it's the seals on these and particularly the o ring itself as you've checked out....

Thanks Gonefishy, I emailed the company I bought it off. They are a big European pet supplies company but they have an Irish division. Hopefully they'll be helpful!

Put vaseline around the o ring and it might tie you over until you hear back from that company.

It can help reduce or stop the leak for a while . most o rings come with a silicone grease on them.I would guess its the o ring thats the problem even when they look perfect they can still be the issue..i ran externals for a while and I found it handy to have a spare o ring, spare impellor and spare tap.they never failed me and i picked them up on ebay v cheaply and had them in cases of emergency at a small cost.i think I since passed them on to people who urgently needed spares!!
Hope you get sorted.
Gavin

Thank you very much for that Gavin, I put Vaseline on the o ring last night and there's been no leaking this morning. Still as you said that is only a temporary solution.

Fair play to the company they emailed me back first thing this morning. What I have to do is send the filter back to jbl to be tested to see if the defect can be repaired or the unit replaced.

So a couple of things...

That could take a while so obviously I'll need a filter in the interim.

Do I pressume I can keep the media I have and just send back the filter with the baskets?

Thanks for all the help guys

Hang it in a bag at the back of the tank in the water

or something similar would be best guess

if i can add, directing some of the water flow at it might help too
