Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

filter outflow placement

I'm setting up a hill stream tank at the moment and I'm looking for a little advice. The tank is 30 inches long and I was thinking of putting the filter in and outflow on the same end of the tank. The main reason for this is that I also intend to have an additional pump in the tank for extra flow. The filter is a JBL Crystalprofi 900 which should turn over the water about 10 times an hour. With the pump running however, the total turnover will be about 30-35 times an hour. With that kind of flow, I figure at least some of the sand will make it's way towards the far end of the tank and possibly into the filter, if I were to place the outflow there. By putting the outflow at the other end and possibly slightly behind the pump, I could remove the likelihood of sand clogging up the filter.

But will it filter the water adequately? Opinions please...

For what it's worth LJ every tank I have ever used sand in - with an excessive flow-rate has seen the sand in a heap in the corner furthest away from the outflow and no matter where I have put the intake sand has found its way into the filter, eventually clogging it.
I know this doesn't in any way answer your question, but that's my experience with sand and strong flow.

How about using a gravel substrate that wouldn't get disturbed by flow

How about having the outflow on a short pipe higher in the tank at same end as the inflow it may help. But gravel/river stones may look good and avoid the sand in the filter issue.

If I was setting up that tank I'd put the output on the power pump side so the filtered water gets better distribution through the tank. The inlet tube should be 1/3 up from the bottom. Hill stream, im thinking will have round stones and gravel rather than sand.
when you have it complete I'd love to see pics.
Ive just read my post, what I meant is.
The output pipe is coming from the filter into the tank, inlet pipe is going to the filter.

Kinda wanted to avoid using gravel, as all i have is pea gravel and it's not really the look I'm going for. I may just have to experiment with flow direction and the positioning of the rocks and see what happens... though keeping the pipe short seems like a good idea.

Any hillstream set ups ive seen online are all gravel and round stone. The stone can be got in any river here ie free. That only leaves gravel 10mm back to very fine 3mm.
