Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi ladz
I had to get a new heater yesterday after yet another one let me down.
I have a few different brands of heaters in my tanks but none of them will heat and keep the temperature i set them.

Is there a reliable heater who keep the water at the temperature you set the dial at?

I m tired to spend money on heaters who cant do the job they are supposed to  and i need a few more to set up a few more shrimp tanks

Thanks
Anthony

Yeah, heaters that don't electrocute you are always a bonus, I find

I find JBL heaters good. Are you sure the ratio of wattage to tank volume is correct? Or is the tank perhaps so big that 2 heaters would help?

Although a little dearer than many of the more regularly-available brands I have always had good results from the Eheim/Jaeger brand.
I'm told some of the new-fangled electronically-controlled ones are good, but have never tried one - so cannot comment. Doubtless people here have and can tell you their findings.

Thanks guys.
The new heater i got is a jbl pro temp 150 rated for tanks 90-200 litres and my tank is a 90 L.
I have to set it at 28 in order to have the water at 26 but at least i didnt get electrocuted !
I will get the eheim ones and see how they are.

I think it's just pot luck to be honest...........when i had the breeding tanks on the go i had loads of 25-50w heaters running that i bought for 3-5euro from China/Hong kong and i cant remember one going on me.............I've one of them Fluval Electronic heaters (E series i think they are) going for a couple of years now and really cant fault it.......bit pricey i think though!!

Yeah I think it's pot luck with the heaters. I have one I bought from woodies about 6 years that's still going strong. I'm using jbl and hagen now and can't fault either and also hydor. The 2 in line hydor external heaters I have I think are the most accurate. They are pricey but you can't see them in the tank.

Ehiem all the way for me, never let me down. Have to set it to 33.5 degrees to get the tank to 29 degrees on them, but I think that's thedsame with all heaters

agree with darkslice - its no big deal to have to set the heaters a bit higher or lower as long as they heat consistenyl once they're up and running.

I've had every type of heater imaginable, many second hand, the only problems I've had is me banging them off things. Other than that, they last well beyond value for money !

I think this is an inherent problem with what we used to call 'heater-stats'.

Back in 'my day' (here he goes again, I hear you saying) heaters and thermostats were completely different entities and could be set independently of one another. Temperature was definitely more constant then, although not always as the bi-metal strip construction was nowhere near as accurate as modern electronically-operated thermostats. I remember well the resistance which greeted the first combined units - people were convinced that by the heating element being directly under the thermostat yet within the same tube there could never be the consistency of temperature which could be got and maintained with the separate units. Some people (myself included) I recall, actually went to the extreme and locked down the thermostatic unit in the combined ones and still used them as just plain heaters - controlled by their original thermostats (sometimes internal, but latterly mostly external 'hang-on' ones).
With the passage of time most of us finally 'came around' to accepting the 'modern' combined units - helped, no doubt, by the advent of much-improved methods of creating water-flow within our tanks - meaning that the heat could circulate far better than with our air driven filters and aerators. However, it seems pretty evident to me that by having the heating element under - or even beside (if you set it horizontally) - will always have a degree of inconsistency. Hopefully this can explain the variation in temperatures achieved but a variation which we all nowadays take pretty well for granted.

Tonight's history lesson over.

I miss my Rena heaters.

JBL would be the ones I generally buy nowadays.

I have a few Aquel heaters as well........and set to 30C.........have done very well for about 4 years so far.

Remember the mega safety of having 3 or 4 heaters connected to a submersed thermostat via a connector block (with a bit of insulation) about 1 inch from the surface of bubbling marine tank surfaces...........whilst wondering if the simply push-in stopper on the thermostat will hold back water and whilst watching the saltwater dissolve the rubber bung on the heaters as you watched.
How the hell did any of us survive?

Something to think about as well is a heat controller, that way you don't have to worry about what the heaters are set to.

I have them on my tanks and find them great. You set the controller to the temp you want and then an alarm goes off if the temp rises/drops by more than 2 degrees. This has recently saved me as I forgot to plug a heater back in after a water change and the alarm went off warning me.

You just set the heater to the max temp and then the controller turns it on/off as needed.

They're very cheap as well and I would defo have them on all tanks
