Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi folks,
I have an APS400 filter that worked seamlessly for 3+yrs, then I replaced the diaphragms last couple of months and now both replacements have failed again, it still works but only at about 30%
I opened the casing and it was hotter than I would have imagined but I wouldn't think that had anything to do with it, the split in the rubber membranes is at centre and side that is adjacent to magnets.

anyone else have similar experience? do you think there is something fundamentally wrong with the pump that is causing the membranes to fail this quickly

I run my tank on organic so air is v important, - luckily I have a smaller backup pump plus i'm running a second internal filter that has a air line attached so that's shooting our plenty of bubbles

thanks
Tom

Not wishing to labour the point but I'm assuming you changed - or at least cleaned the air filter?
In my experience of all air pumps if the air supply is limited by a clogged up filter the operation is severely limited - sometimes causing overheating problems, and the diaphragms of pumps do not last long when subjected to extra heat. A second cause of overheating can be caused if the total air output is under pressure - for example, used with the all the output under water. without surplus air being 'bled off'.

Of course, you might well have replaced/cleaned the filter, in which case the problem would appear to be more sinister and the extra heat you mention might be down to an internal electrical fault but I would mention that I have two of the single-outlet Tetratec airpumps running continually and - while they don't run at what you might call a cool temperature - they are not overly hot either.

I'm not saying these are the only things which might be wrong, just offering a couple of suggestions for things to check.

Can anyone add to these?

John

cheers John, I did replace the air filter, the heat I mentioned is when i opened the casing and touched the coil, hard to say how hot the main body temp would be, i'll see how i get on with a replacement and if they go then I will have to look at a new pump. I guess close to 5 yrs isnt too bad going??
