Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Rena Smart Heater

I'm thinking of buying 2 x 200watt Rena Smartheaters for my 350litre tank and I know these heaters have been mentioned on here before but need more info and would appreciate your feedback please.

If you've had experience using this particular inline heater I'd love to hear your comments. I've a couple of queries:

Will this heater work with my Tetratec EX1200 filters?
Will it fit adequately on the Tetra tubing without a problem?
Will it affect the flow from the spray bars?
Has anyone experienced any unreliability with them? Are they really unbreakable?

I am planning on replacing the heaters on three other smaller tanks with this brand of heater also. I just don't like having a heater hanging inside the tank, it bothers me and I'm a nerve case when it comes to lecky. Sorry for all the questions but just started fish keeping little over 5 months ago and sure I'm only learning... Thanks in advance.

personally never used them but found jager heaters to be the best and most reliable

Hey ya Bella,
i have two 300watts heating a 700l tank and i have to say i do like them. cant really vouch for their reliability though as one of the two heaters has stopped working properly, flashing the warning light constantly. saying that, the other heater was still able to heat the tank! not recommended, but impressive..

i wouldnt like this to put you off though, as i would hope that i was just a little unlucky and got a dud.
they're very neat, seem very strong, dont need any gaurds, dont affect the spraybar and fit fine with the tetratec EX 1200 (i use this external also).

however, you say you dont like a heater to be inside the tank, and although it is an in-line heater, it still sits inside the tank - its connected to the external filters intake pipe work..

hope this helps and feel free to ask more..

Thanks for the replies, yep I heard Jäger heaters have a good reputation.

Rolly it does sound like the Rena heaters are clever little things but I misunderstood that they are still submersed inside the tank. Thanks so so much for taking the time to reply and the good info on them.

However, I feel the Hydor ETH inline heater would suit me best because as the diagram shows it is outside the tank and that is exactly what I am after. Anyone using these on here?

Was going to buy one of these on my last tank setup as hate the sight of heaters myself but one of the lads in the lfs turned me off them. He didn,t rate them at all and said he knew of 2 tank wipeouts due to failure of the heaters.

Bestof luck

Jeff

Posted elsewhere but i have one now for about a month. My tank is small 90l so taking the heater out freed up space and improved the look. so far it is rock solid. They come in 200 and 300 watts I think and also to suit 12mm or 16mm tubing. I'm very happy so far and got it on fleabay in original box, instructions and spotless so one careful owner. :) :)

Hi Sincgar you've convinced me and I'm going to buy 2 x 200watts for my African Cichlid setup. I'll see how I get on with them but I think I can see myself replacing all my heaters in my other tanks too. I know at the start they had some teething problems but lately feedback has been good on American forums where they are mentioned quite a lot. Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.

Replied by wolfsburg (wolfsburg) on topic Re:Rena Smart Heater
I have a 300w smart heater in my 260l, I am very fussy about what visible equipment I have in tanks. I use it in conjunction with my external and I think it's the business. It's very inconspicuous as a heater and inconspicuous as a filter intake... roll that into the one thing and you're onto a winner. Reliability-wise I've heard a couple of bad things about them but that won't stop me from using this model any time soon!
