Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm wondering if what I'm looking for is the right combination of High Lite Day, High Lite Nature or High Lite Colour? Or one tube of what I have already mentioned and one blue tube?
Cheers!
Rory.

are you sure its not an age thing...how old are the tubes..? they tend to lose their intensity with age.

Cheers I'll have a look at that link, I was looking for picure comparisons. I don't think there is any way to modify the light bar... if the seals are broken water will get in and then the lights will go. Hopefully the LEDs I am getting will improve the situation.hi wolfsberg

Yeah the tubes aren't too new. The tank was manufactured in 2007 but was only setup for the first time in November 2009. I thought this might be a possibility but there is no blackening at the ends of the tubes.
I don't think the yellow substrate helps and there is bog wood in there too although the tanins are well leeched by now. I just want something that is more white. The yellow is a bit naff.

well you know what to get then,
he has listed them,
i personally don't believe the hype
when it comes to aquarium brand bulbs
that guide tells you everything you want to know,
plants will grow under a wide variety of kelvins
so your own aesthetics are the guide!
pick light you like the look of!
i have bought from lampspecs before
(the place yer man got the bulbs for that thread)
if you can modify your juwel light unit, that is

Can't I'm afraid! The lights only work when both tubes are in place... That's why I want to make sure I'm getting what I want before I fork out!Try removing the nature tube and seing if the colour you want is the day. Then get a second day tube.
Thanks for the suggestion though!

Unfortunately I am stuck with Juwel tubes for the moment as they are a specific length, JBL have started doing ones to fit but I heard they aren't quite as good as the originals.

How about wraping something around the nature tube to black it out to check?? (be careful with kitchen foil, but it will work! Don't leave it on for long, just use to check effect.)
AFIK, the nature is about 3800ish k (looks yellow), whereas the day is 6500k (looks natural).
If you have a good relationship with your local shop, borrow (pay deposit!!) a day, reef day and reef blue and play with the combinations till you get what you like. If the local gets the repeat sales from you, they will be happy to help, and will probably offer a discount on the yearly bulb changes.
(hint, change one bulb every 6 months. Less adjustments for fish, plants and algae)
