Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Tetra Tec 1200 on the way out - Replace or Not?

I have a 450 Litre African Cichlid tank with a couple of Rusty Pleco's and an Electric Blue Crayfish. The first 12 months I had it I ran a traditional set up but after several water quality challenges which peaked with daily water changes (a pretty significant undertaking!!) I switched over to Organic Aqua and have had a stable hassle free experience since then i.e. over 2 years ago.

Originally I just had a Tetra Tec 1200 external but added an internal Jad SP-2300III submersible filter around the time I switched over to Organic Aqua as I wanted to increase the flow rate in the tank. The Tetra Tec is collecting a lot less waste material than the internal Jad and my question is "Do I need an external filter when I'm running an Organic Aqua set up or not"?

The Tetra Tec has started to leak so I'm either going to to have to replace it or run the tank solely off the Internal Jad or perhaps install a higher capacity internal or a 2nd internal? I like the idea of having back up devices so there is no single point of failure during holiday periods etcv.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and accept that if I go ahead and try running the tank solely on the internal filter and I have a problem it won't be your fault!!

Regards,

BenEadir

Hi Stan,

Thanks for the info. Like the avatar BTW, come on King Kenny!!

I'll drop Tetra an email but in the event I don't qualify for a free motorhead replacement (It's over 3 years old now) can you and/or those with experience steer me in the right direction between the following:-

1. An Eheim External Filter Professional 3 2075 for €160

2. A JBL Cristal Profi External Filter e1500 for €110

I have an eHeim air pumpand an eHeim heater and both work perfectly so I know eHeim is 'the' brand to go with but those who use the JBL filters seem very happy with them and €50 is €50 after all!!!

Honest John already emailed them stating it's amost 3 years old so we'll see what they say.

TBH I've lost confidence in the Tetra Tec brand so unless they replace the unit with a modified/improved design which actually addresses the problem I'd prefer to switch to eHeim for peace of mind. Surely the first and most important design function of an external filter is that it doesn't dump 450 Litres of water into your living room while you sleep killing all your fish and lifting your wodden floor etc?? I know it's only a trickle at the moment but my genuine concern is that the weakness which is allowing a trickle now will increase to a full on flow at some stage and it's only a matter of time.

Better to switch over to something which is proven to work.

I'll give Tetra until lunchtime tomorrow to reply to my email and if they don't or they don't clearly agree to ship a replacement head unit then I'll be putting my order in for an eHeim.

Ben
