Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

Finally have the tank cleaned took alot longer then i thought. So ill will be starting the aquascaping this week

First im gonna start the pipe work on the sump on tue night, havnt a clue on about setting it up so any help would be great. The tank is a betta 1300

Also on the return pump im looking at the eheim compact 1000/2000 which would suit me better...?
Im not looking for alot of flow round the tank coz it will be planted. Or any other pump that suits once its quite enough.....!!!

Im gonna make a rock cave network out of polystrene boards, what paint do i use too coat it in...? And i guessing i can use some tech7 to stick it together...?

i have the same tank, you want to run a pump that puts out at least 3000l/h to over 2m i dont think those eheims can lift water too high (i use a poor quality chinese 4000l/h that no way puts out that flow at 0m and at the 1.6m i reckon its only 1000l/h) otherwise it just wont lift the water at all. you will need powerheads or an external for extra flow within the tank to eliminate dead spots in the water. if you use an external (i will be looking into getting one myself in time) then you could fill it with floss/polishing pads to take out the fine particles and keep the sump with bio media like ceramic and bioballs - trust me if the flow blocks in a sump chamber its a bugger cleaning out the sump)

as for the rokwork - i think epoxy resin has been used by people here who have done diy backgrounds, to seal it. some use resin and throw sand/gravel onto the background to give a really natural look rather than paint

keep us updated with pics please!

seen the same tank running with the eheim compact 2000 and it was turned down abit but still had alot of flow round the tank.

Was gonna run pipe work round the back of the tank connect to a external to add extra flow extra and to help clean all the mess that will get stuck round the base of the plants bogwood etc.

On the rock area I'm gonna cover it in plants mosses etc and go over a slate colour look.
Then below that rock work have a grass land area with mosses and caves in the substrate.

sounds good. i was gunna downsize my pump but its so weak there's no need i'll get an external for extra flow and polish, and i use a koralia in there atm
my advice for carpet grass: plant it early with just wet substrate do not plant with water inside. after all plants are down then half fill and just have a small bit of flow no fish. leave it for around a month for the grass to establish if you are planning on having scavenger fish they will pull it all up. i've half a pot left after 2 pots of eleocharis parvula its the best grass but i made the mistake of putting the cory's in there first and when the loaches went in last they lifted most of it up. little buggers!
