Media - what and where?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Something I'd be really interested to hear people's views on:
What filter media do you use - especially in externals - how much of it and where in the scheme of things?
I'll bet a lot of folks have their own "recipes" with different combos for different tanks & routines

You are right Jim; its really hard to say. I only run carbon few times a year after giving tank mega ultra big clean

I make sure the floss and foam is changed regularly; have most nitrate/nitrite reducing thingy(usually comes with your external)
I dont go for any other medias; unless soemone will recommend a really good one.I guess I am not very particular when it come to buying/using extra medias. Oh and most crucially i use polyfilters too in my external. Seems to bring the colours out in my fishes.

Well, for any newbies that may cross this Post, the denser/closer the gaps are in the media, small Sponge Pores or thick Filter floss/Wool, the slower your flow will be and will be even slower when it gets clogged.
I usually have the larger pored stuff toward the bottom and use the top like a Sieve with finer media like floss etc to keep the pores down at the base clear and oxygenated.
Kev.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I guess I just wondered as there's so many different options available now and I'm experimenting with a few of them.
I'm sure there are some folks who have the most basic setups which never fail and are simply and cheap to maintain . And I'm sure there are some going to the opposite end - high tech, new media, different combinations with different results.
I guess we all find what suits us in the end . . .

Jim,
To add to these suggestions I like to use the plastic 'scrubbers' - similar to - but much cheaper than - the Eheim media (the name of which escapes me).
Efficient and easy to clean, they're great as a 'second stage' after the ceramic rings...you can either use them whole for larger filters or 'unravel' them as necessary.
