Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Filter help

Just bought and set up a JBL e901 external and it's making quite a bit of noise.
Every 30 or 40 seconds its making a kind of flushing noise and pushing air out of the outlet pipe into the tank.
Actually sounds a bit like a washing machine at the min.
Is this the norm ? Is it just pushing the excess air out of the filter or is it taking air in somewhere ??
Any ideas ?????

Paddy,
With the externals it really is advisable to expel all the air from the circuit before turning it on - unfortunately this is often easier said than done.
Try putting the outlet pipe into a bucket with power turned off and see if any air bubbles come out of it (obviously don't let the bucket overflow.
Stand the filter on some newspaper - you will soon see if it is leaking - in theory, if air is getting in water should also be leaking out.
More likely is there is air trapped in the media which, once the lid is on and sealed can really only escape through the outlet - via the impellor and when there is an air lock in there the impellor runs without water and makes very much the sort of noise you describe.
So I suggest you syphone water through it with the power off until no trace of air bubbles are fortcoming - with the filter lower than tank level. then try again.
Let us know how it progresses.

Sorry, I was out 'water changing'...
If you have the intake connected and under water you should find that water will still flow through the canister and into the bucket if it has been running.
I don't know that filter personally but if it has a 'pump-type' flow starter you could use that to get the passage of water flowing through and into the bucket. Otherwise it's the tried and trusted 'suck' method of syphoning you'll need to use - try to not swallow too much tank water - especially if it's RO, or other fancy water!

Were there any set up instructions? If so they would probably do a better job at describing what to do than I'm managing to put into words!

Is there a prime on the filter, keep pressing that for abit.also rock the filter a bit,it might free up the air lock somewhere. Failing that just open it up and again pour in more tank water and start the process again. It normally frees itself out anyhow.

Yes there's a prime alright. I've tried as John suggested.
Just as I think it's ok it splurts out more bubbles. And I HATE micro bubbles

As you say Gav, it may sort itself out (fingers X'd)
Thanks for your help guys !
