Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I am a bit dubious about these wonder products that u just pop it in the tank and all u have to do is feed the fish, no algae, no water changes and so on. Maybe someone here has first hand experience with this super eco block.

I dont know. i just read the articles and FAQs on the site and it looks too good to be true.
usually that means it aint true.
I dont know about anyone else but for me, while I would love something to reduce the tedius part of tank maintenance its all part of the attraction to the hobby. Testing the water and achieving the results for the fish I pick. Not just picking fish and sitting watching them.
If you want to breed fish you have to do water changes and adjust temperatures etc and you are advised not to do water changes with this product.
Any way thats just my tuppence worth.

I finally managed to get into the link.....it wouldn't work with my IE initially.

All quite interesting stuff. But this is yet another product that, in its claims at least, has missed the point of water changes by mile.

There is more to good fish keeping than nitrate levels. We can all make effective ways of reducing nitrates without waster changes......but such activity is not good for general fish health (it ain't just nitrates that are going harm the health of a fish !!!).

However, I have not tried this product and there is some truth in their claims.....the claims are not as 'magical' as some other products (which is good anyway).

They have said that the rock is a volcanic rock.....not a magical one, but one that will slowly release various redox agents (if that actually works in practice, then that is a good thing for many fish...but not all).

They have cited a specific bacteria.....not a 'magical one' (as in some products)....the science of a named species can be researched to see what it can and can't do.
But, I am not too sure if this is a genetically modified bacteria....why? at the bottom of the page it mentions "They are safe microorganisms with a determined DNA sequence.".
I know that B.subtilis is a great candidate for recombinant DNA messing (ie making genetically modified organisms)......so is that what is in this product? a GMO that can do the work of other bacteria?
Interesting....and possible as well.

Even if sceptical.....I always keep my eyes un-blinkered.

People doubted Easy life fluid Filter media but it works, they keep some details secret but it causes flocculation , ie, it makes suspended crap stick together and it is then caught in your Filter , try out new fangled things, that's why we come to have healthy Teeth, TOOTHPASTE!!

There are more than one hobbyist on the Forum who keep more than one Tank , some keep many and it consumes many hours to do Water changes, if you happen to be flush with Cash and have lots of spare Time, I would say yay to Water changes but to those of us with both jobs, Kids AND Households to keep ANYTHING that promises to free up Time is welcome.
