Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Does any one know of a quiet air pump, a really quiet one, I have tried the aquael ones and interpet airvolution, but they all seem to be noisey. i don't want to spend any more money until I find the right one. Perhaps I am just getting more sensitive as I get older !

Hi Tumblina,

I use a Hailea piston pump. Quiet, very efficient and very powerful.

I might be getting rid of mine in a few months if you are interested in a fairly new second hand one.............I want a bigger one

Best Regards..............Tony
p.s. should have mentioned that they cannot be bought in this country. A guy on ebay sells them if you want his details let me know.

You probably know this already but I have just copped on myself.
The noise of my pump was driving me mad so when I realised that most of the noise was from the stone itself and not the pump the only way of making it quiter was to have the airstone away from the side of the tank. When it was at the back next to the glass the sound of the air through the water was resonating through the whole tank, the tank acting as a giant speaker.

My 2cent worth.

Processor.

Just took my tetratec 400 out of the box to test it for this thread, thought it would've been quieter to be honest, but its not as loud as my Interpet Aqua air ap4,or the elite 801.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

My Interpet is pretty noisy, but it's more the bubbles in the tank than the pump itself. I'm not sure there is really any totally quiet air pump.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi all yes the pumps cause noise through vibrations caused by the motor creating the air . Try getting a sheet of polystireen (spelling) foam and make a box to house the pump[ this will reduce the vibration somewhat. hope this helps

P.S. Pumps overheat and need circulation some holes in the sides will do the trick.

Luckily the rack of tanks will be next to a shed, wall not built yet,so if the pump itself is noisy,it will go in the shed, and drill the hose through the wall.As Ken said, its mainly the noise of the bubbles, and several sponge filters will probably drown out the low hum of the machine itself.
