Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anyone used one of these in a freshwater setup. Are they worth every cent or a waste of time?

Just asking cause I'm a gadget freak & have been looking at them for a while

Hi Mark,

I got one a few months back. It's the Tetra one and is good for up to 400l. It's also a good price at €82 from Aquaristic.net as I've seen other brands here for up to €200 for a similar capacity. I just connected it to my outlet pipe from my external filter so it sterilises the water heading back to the tank.

www.aquaristic.net/shop.php/sid/710866b6...erilizer%20UV%20400/

They are good for keeping the water clear. I always had a slight green tint in my water, but now it's crystal clear. It should also kill any algae spores floating in the water. However it does nothing for the other types of algae - I still have lots of it.

It's also supposedly good for keeping whitespot and other bacterial diseases at bay. It should cut down the chances of transmitting from fish to fish. However, keeping your water in good condition and quarantining should also achieve this.

You will see a lot of debate if you do an internet search. Lots of those for and against UVs. Some say that they modify iron in the water and make it less useful to plants, others say that over cleansing the water will weaken the fishes' immune system.

My main reason for getting it was the gourami iridovirus I had in my tank. I wanted to ensure it was eradicated from the water. Although, it won't stop my other non gourami fish from being potential carriers.

Is it a must? IMO, no, but nice to have. I don't use mine all the time. I ran it for the first couple of months and then only run it when I add new fish. I have it running at the moment due to the problems I experienced with my angels.

Regards,

Ken.

UV clarifiers the water flows faster-they are for green water control and some parasite/pathogen control, UV sterilizers are for parasite/pathogen control, sterilizers are much more effent for killing these.

There's an option to change to English. Look for the flags at the top left.
