Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Digital Timers in LIDL

Hi,

Just in case anyone's interested, LIDL have digital timers in stock for €7.99. They have 20 separate programs and have battery back up in case of a power cut (so you don't loose your settings).

Not bad value IMO.

Regards,

Ken.

Anthony the timers can be programmed to come on/off over a seven day period for any time you want, thats the main advantage for me anyway, if I want to go away for a few days I can programme the timer to reduce the lighting in my tanks for the days that im away, some mechanical timers don't work with certain PH controllers either, they knock off after 24 hours and don't come back on.

With these timers you can programme each day individually (can also programme each day multiple times for on/off purposes) if you want thats the main advantage I suppose, good for auto dosing units as well although these will work with mechanical timers but only in 10/15 minute segments, so less room for error with the digi timers which can be programmed for a few seconds if you wanted.

Bit finicky to setup, instructions etc, but once you get the hang of them they are easy to use.

Anthony,

these timers do all sort of fancy things but in my mind the essential thing is that they switch your lights on an off and the battery back-up is a definite bonus. Let's assume you have a planted tank and while you are away a power cut occurs. Timers without battery back-up will not switch on again. Not good for your plants. Or I have heard of some that stay constantely switched on one the juice comes back. Not good for plants and fish.
If I get out of work at a decent time I'll get myself two of them. 1 to switch on my normal lights and one for the moonlight when the normal lights go off. They are much easier to set than those analog ones with the dials.

Get you`s now.
I taught they were fish related only.

I have a similar one and its been working great for 4 months now.
I also have one of the manual ones.
Also OK but doesn't have the 'smart' facility of the digital clock.
