Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,
Is there a anyone that can help, I have bought a second hand tank there is a build up of lime scale and was wondering if there is a safe way to remove it I.E fish safe product or method used that won't leave a residue.
Also is using 2 100w heaters the same as using 1 200w heater i'm guessing no but said i'd ask
Cheers

If the limescale isn't too severe you should be able to shift it with some vinegar and elbow grease. If that doesn't work the next plan of action would be to get something like 'pH down' - sold for reducing the pH in water. This, added to the previously mentioned elbow grease should do the trick, but you will need a] to wear protective gloves and b] really clean the tank out afterwards with fresh water.
2 100watt heaters does equate to one 200watt one.
Depending upon the size of the tank you could consider setting the temperature of one at a few degrees lower than the other, this will leave you with one 'to hand' so to speak, should the one set higher fail.
However, if the tank is much larger than 100 litres this mightn't be such a good suggestion - unless the tank is sited in a fairly warm situation - then this could still work.
Can you advise the Forum members the tank size, then someone will be able to advise you on the best course of action for you.

Hi newbejkjimk,i will stand to be corrected for what i say but i don't think that Filter nor that/them heaters would be suffice in a tank that size.......You could always add a small internal to run with that 205 maybe

Sound advice there - 240l is a good deal larger than I had anticipated.
Your heaters might be OK for the Summer and the filter is most definitely insufficient. Sorry to confirm the less-than-good news.
