Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Generators

Generators was created by JohnH (John)
I was in B&Q Athlone again yesterday and noted that they still had the little (800watt) 2-stroke generators for the ludicrously cheap price of under €53.

For anyone considering a back-up electricity supply this would be ideal. A little noisy, but a small price to pay for the peace of mind one would give in the event of a power cut (always assuming, of course, that you could be 'on hand' to set it up when power goes....).

800 watts will not run too much more, I used one fairly recently in the event of power outage for all-day 'maintenance' and, with extension leads trailing all around the house, it ran all my filters and lights (tanks are still spread all around the house) and I was even able to use the computer and hi-fi (but I didn't chance that at the same time!).

So, if they have them in Athlone the chances are they're still in stock in the larger City stores as well. I would consider that price (plus the cost of a gallon of 'mix') very good value for the 'reassurance' that having one would bring..

Worth thinking about anyhow.

Sounds like they're worth a look, especially at that price. However, they can be noisy. I can't see the neighbours being too impressed if I crank one of these up in the early hours.

Regards,

Ken.

You're right, of course Ken.

Not having any immediate neighbours I tend to take for granted the 'noise' factor...

I'm sure they could live with a couple of hours noise...It's the ESB they should be getting pi**ed off with. Crap service at the highest price in Europe since they are paying outrageous wages for Homer Simpson type of jobs. Never mind their bankrupt pension plan. Ok, my rant for Friday is over

haha, I wouldn't even think about the neighbours...I'd be more interested and worried about the poor fish!! The neighbours will get over it...unfortunately for the fish they may not!! :)

A generator is a definately good idea...no messing with wrapping up your tank or anything like that. :D

The Lidl one has so far given me peace of mind on two occasions!! Why do they always insist in shutting down the electricity in the evening time when its dark!! Now that I have two tanks running...its going to get interesting next time! :)

Moral of the story...Buy a Generator!!

True, think fish first. Your neighbours will pi** you off at some stage as anyway. Do they offer a package, Generator & shotgun?
