Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Do I need an air pump/stone?

Hey guys,

Just looking for advice on whether I need an air pump/stone or not in my 7' tank.

I have the FX5 output a good bit above the water line so this produces a lot of splashes/gas exchange and has done fine in the past but recently I have noticed my tilapia going to the surface of the water after a feed.

Do ye think I need to add an air pump or I've also read that the tilapia just do this after a big feed?

All the other fish are perfect and are never at the top for air.

If I need one I'm looking at the Eheim 400. Would this do the job on such a big tank?

Thanks for the help.

Alan.

Don't think you need an airpump, as you have good surface movement on your tank, and as you say, Tilipia have a habit of mooching about the surface after feeding, looking for that extra titbit, but if you are getting an airpump the Eheim 400 are as silent as they come.

Ski 7ft is a long tank you need some sort of a power head to move the watrr around the tank as the fx5 will be at its limit in a big tank with big fish.

I have a twin port eheim and its super quite and u can adjust the air pressure
I also have a 4 port sera precision 550 and its really quite and top quality
It's no harm for extra air and a large air stone can give a nice effect in the tank

Something fishie going on here

Alan you could use a stream pump for extra water movement/surface movement, the Tunze 6025 would suit.
It uses 5w and pumps 2800 litres an hour in a wide flow. you can pick one up for about €45 - €50
I know its personal taste, but I am not one for bubble walls and the like.
You could instead add a second external filter, more filteration and added water movement, but I suspect you have a second filter on yoyr tank anyway.
What is important is to avoid "dead" spots in the water.

Thanks guys, I'll check those out.

Crusty, I only have one fx5 on that tank. Would like to put on a second but there's not enough room in the corners of the clearseal tank. I'd have to cut the glass cover

the fx5 is a big filter capable of dealing with 600l tank. id say once your not over stocked and keep the filter clean you are fine with 1

Yeah it seems to be doing fine alright but I'm heavily stocked. Clean it regularly though and do big water changes
