Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Make your own, much cheaper and you will get what you want. I'll post some pictures of the ones I did for my own tank tonight

I was in Wackers when you bought it, I'm not sure on the price but it was around €50 a square.
I was like 'Whaaaaat?!!!'
I think you got a 'Gavin special' discount though.

Back to Nature are very expensive and don't last all that long for what I hear.

What did you hear? I have back to nature in one Rio 180 and about to buy it for another one. In the 450 I have the Juwel \"wood\" version and I would never get it again, it takes up way too much water space and the surface is only like painted polysterene which I am sure would not last the attentions of a large pleco if they were so inclined, whereas the back to nature ones are much thinner and have a stong plastic coating, so tough in fact it is quite difficult to cut with a stanley blade.

It is expensive, but I think it really finishes off a tank, particularly if you are not filling it with plants etc. It looks much more natural than the paper backgrounds.

I have made my backgrounds my from styrofoam, painted with acrylic paint, varnished several times. In one of them I sprinkled some areas with riversand after the first coat of varnish and then varnished three more time.
No problems with plecos nibbling off the paint. The pictures aren't the best but I'll take some better ones tomorrow:

You'll get the idea anyway. I also just did a small tank with slate. Will also have to take pictures of it tomorrow since the youngest member of the family is asleep in the room wher the tank is

Interesting, but looks like a lot of work. I'd imagine that carving a background like that out of polystyrene would take amount of artistic skill that I don't possess.

Just went for a black background on my Malawi tank, but think I might change it to dark blue to add more depth.

Regards,

Ken.

That's what I did. It's dirt easy. You can either use a Stanely knife and even it out with a hairdryer or use a soldering iron and a hairdryer which is less messy but needs to be done in the open. Some people use acetone to etch the polystrene and submerge it in water for a week or so to get rid of the acetone.
