Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,
New to the forum, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for locking on an aquarium cover to make it hard for children to lift it off, but still let me in when I need to?

Thanks.

Are we talking about the whole cover or just the flap?
And how old are your kids? My oldest is 4 and he can't even reach the top of the tank

Not the flap, the whole cover, kids from 18mths to 6 years, the older ones know to stay away, but the little fella loves climbing and has figured out how to push chairs around to get at what he wants. Not hugely concerned that they will get up to it myself, more looking for something which will put the other adult in the house at ease (she has a very vivid imagination when it comes to 'dangerous' things in the house).

Thanks.

I'd get one of those child locks for fridges which you actually stick on. Means you can take them off later when the kids get older.

I actually tried one from boots, but the sticky pads wouldn't stay on the glass, will probably end up getting a big lump of rope and wrapping it around the tank!

Wrap it around the tank or the kids, same result

Seriously though you could try superglue to hold it into place and if the tank is glass you can scrap it off later.

Silicon may also work and is probably safer than putting glue near the tank.

Ken.

Would prefer to tie the kids up myself!

Was thinking of glue to hold it down, but afraid of side effects.

Will try a few drops of silicon and see how I get on, am amazed no company has anything for this, I could not have the only mischievous children around???

Yeah, I know that feeling. My wife has a vivid imagination as well, such as that my eldest could push a 600l tank of its stand. (where was he when I had to haul it through the frontdoor? :cheer: )
No,I do agree. Get aquarium silicone and glue it on. If you can't get hold of aquarium silcione don't use the commercial stuff in the DIY shops. Contains fungizides, not a good idea. There is a silicone substitute that I have used but can't come up with the name at the moment. Trip into the shed tonight and I will post the name of it tonight. Your local builders provider should stock it.
