Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just checked out the website, looks a decent little tank.

Ideal for the beginner or as a breeding tank.

As long as the user manual/ instructions doesn't say:
\"fill up with water, now add fish\"

It says that there is a 3 year warranty with it too!!!

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

I could always rip out the staircase and and use the tanks as steps.
Oh! wait. I have already riped out the staircase and i'm now using a ladder.
Maybe some sky hooks down the middle of the room. I would easily get another 10 in there.

I can see a Que of anoraks outside Aldi on Sunday.

the wife's going to have a fit when I come home with one of them. Back from the holidays on Saturday, new tank on Sunday. She might be too jet-lagged to notice  Well, pay back time for all the clothes and shoes she bought. I'll cry if I get dragged to one more outlet store

Picked one up in Coolock this morning. Very sturdy little tank. Much better than I expected and great value for €70. They were selling like hot cakes so I'd doubt if they have any left at this stage.

I was convinced the other day after looking at the Aldi page, that they were/are the Eheim aquastar tank. However, there was 1 in aldi tonight when I went in,and the tank in the store was NOT the 1 in the picture on their site that I was comparing the eheim to.
However,I'm sure they're still a great wee tank.

I think it is the same tank or at least the same lid. Mine has the same lid as the one on the Eheim web site. It also has a decent little heater and filter. The accessories are all branded Vita Tech.

It will make a perfect breeding tank. I just need ot find somewhere to put it. I'm currently in planning permission discussions with the wife.

Ken.

It was mainly the lid that made me think it was an Eheim, however I looked into a box at Aldi that contained a smashed tank, the lid differed to the one shown in photo on Aldis website.Only a minor detail I guess.
I would have got 1 myself, but I don't have the space for it,still got about 10 tanks waiting for a rack and to be filled.
A possible new category for show \"Aldi tank\";)

I wonder how many newbie fishkeeperes were in their LFS today or even yesterday evening getting stock for the new tank. I am sure there will be a few new tank syndrome questions coming our way over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully most LFS will not have sold them any fish yet, if they new they were going into a new tank...

But on the positive side out of every ten newbies that bought a tank we will hopefully end up with 2 or 3 long term fishkeepers :-)

That's what I was thinking as well. However, the instructions that come with the tank are not bad. It goes though the process of doing a fishless cycle using flake food which it says will take at least 3-4 weeks. Whoever wrote their manual knows a thing or two about fish keeping.

Not sure too many people will follow it or even read it for that matter.

Ken.

Yep, let's just hope people read it. But who's reading instructions these days? Sort of like my better half buying a new mobile phone. Package and instructions go in the bin straight away. A couple of days later and of course first something is wrong with the phone and then I'm being called stupid when I can't figure it out. The same happens with DVD recorders, washing machines or any electrical appliance you care to mention;)

From the picture at least they look to have the same hood as the MP Aquastar 60. I doubt they are Eheim as they are expensive buggers and unless Aldi are making a loss leader on them I wouldnt say they are. In any event, I'd imagine they are all gone now.

Thanks,

I wasnt interested in buying one anyway, its just that someone had told me they were MP/Eheim so I just wanted to see if anyone actully knew if they were or not.

There is no way Eheim would supply Aldi but there was always the chance they picked them up through some bankrupt shop or something.

I would be surprised if they are but would still like it confirmed from anyone that got one if possible.

Why wouldn't they? Aldi gets a lot of stuff that is produced by brand name producers and then sold under Aldi's own brand name.
A friend of mine is a chemist working for the German consumer agency and he told me that their washing powder is exactly the same as some well known brand name.
If you offered Eheim to buy ten thousands of tanks, I don't see why they wouldn't sell it.

Please feel free to correct me if Eheim has a policy that states that they will not sell their equipment to third parties to be sold under a different label.

It could be a third party tank that Eheim have rebranded. Now that third party is selling those tanks (or something similar) to Aldi. I'd doubt if Eheim personally manafucture everything that carries their brand.

Hi,

I have been involved in consumer electronics, white goods and automotive industries for a number of years and it's very common for a 'platform product' to be produced, tweaked as appropriate and for this to be sold under different brand names i.e. supermarket 'own label' products are more often than not produced by the same manufacturer who puts a brand name on the package and ships to the next stage in the supply chain. Cars, washing machines, electronic goods are just some of the other examples where this behaviour to varying extents is common.

Vita Tech is probably a sub-brand within the Vitakraft empire and who knows what deal could have been worked out between Eheim,Vitakraft and Aldi which has allowed the later to give us this deal. To offer a 3 year gaurantee suggests that Aldi are confident in the quality hence makes me suspect that it could be an Eheim product. I've brought one and to be honest, in this age of 'you get what you pay for' it comes as a pleasant surprise that this is a very good quality product for what is, lets face it, a bargain basement price.

kom

A little confusion it seems;

What I was asking or intending to ask was if the tanks carry the Eheim or MP branding, not if they were manufactured by Eheim (although I'd be sceptical about that also).

and what I meant in the little quote used below was that I don't believe that Eheim would allow Aldi to offer Eheim/MP branded products.

Sorry for the mix-up

Ok thanks, yeah I have seen that in one of the other posts since. Its just I havnt seen a picture of the tanks nor have I been able to visit Aldi to see myself.

By all accounts they seem very similar to the MP tanks so I guess there is the possibility that they have come from the same factory, If so they are a very good product and that really is a bargain. Congrats to whoever has got one.

The Vita Tech 300 (sold by Vitakraft) internal filter is the same as the Eheim 2008. So that leads me to believe that Eheim and Vitakraft have some sort of corporation agreement

I set up this tank today. It's a super little tank and very well made. That includes the heater and filter.

There's a sticker inside the lid that has MP on it. Acara was spot on. It does look as though the tank (or at least the lid) is made by Eheim.

Ken.
