Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Looks the same type as the one Aldi had a couple of weeks ago, only bigger. I have to say, the Aldi tank is great and was a real bargain. It feels like quality as do the filter and heater that came with it.

Regards,

Ken.

They are marketing it under the Vitakraft brand.I believe this may be part of the Masterfoods empire, which includes Mars,Whiskers,Pedigree,Royal Canin,Uncle Bens, etc, etc. Also,I heard they own API,that make stress coat, test kits, etc. They in turn own Aquarian and Rena. This is just the start of what they own,and you thought Tesco had grand plans!
Wouldnt surprise me if Eheim are in the portfolio somewhere.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I might set up a nano in one.
If only I had a fish house I would buy 10 of them.(Plus I need the money too).
LOL.

Eheim aren't a part of masterfoods. I don't know much about vitakraft but I don't believe they are, not sure though. Rena, API etc are and they're now called 'Mars Fishcare' or something along those lines.

I'd say you'd know after setting it up with filter media and see the flowrate then.

I'd say keep the one that comes with it. It looks the same design as the one I got with the 60l in ALDI which has a good flow and seems to be decent quality. It's been said below that the accessories look like rebranded obsolete Eheim stuff so quality shouldn't be an issue.

Ken.

This tank is very nice.
At the bottom there is a sticker that says \"MP Aquarien und Technik\" which, by googling it, points to Eheim tanks. The packaging is indeed very similar. Everything comes with it, nice Xmas present B) (to myself in this case :woohoo: )!

I just dropped into lidl in finglas and there are none left. I can't get to anymore of them today because of work. I was wondering if anybody would do me the huge favour of buying an extra tank and selling it to me. I'd really appreciate it. Cheers

I just bought one as a gift for a 4 year old neighbour , I have no place to set it up and cycle the tank in advance of Christmas . Could I pop the filter into my own tank and let it run together with my own external filter , my tank is 180l ?

You should be able to do that, but it will take the usual time to cycle.
I found that you could simply half your existing dirty media between the two and hey presto two cycled filters! (ok so they will both have to mini cycle but as long as you only put a few fish into the new tank at first it shouldn't be a problem.
I have jump started tanks this way now five times without incident.

If cycling is a problem, just use a bottle of safestart.

Works a treat.

I managed to get the last one in Tullamore 5 minutes after they opened! They were walking out of the shop. One guy had 2 (one under each arm, big guy!). That wasn't you Daragh?

Seriously though, the instruction sheets that came with it are very comprehensive. But I was shocked to read that it recommended that the filter be cleaned \"under running water\"!!! I thought the bad old days were done and dusted.

Will set it up a quarantine tank for the new reef system. Do I need to make any modifications to it to house marines? I was going to pop the filter into my sump for a few days to seed it. Will this be OK?

The light is an 18watt T8. Hopefully not too strong as I understand the quarantine tank should have subdued lighting. As the volume is 84Litres, can I safely put two clownfish in it together (Ocellaris) ?

Kind regards

Seany

Should be ideal. Just add a couple of pieces of live rock and bit of cover and they should be fine. Ideal size for quarintine.

I wouldnt bother with a light for a qt tank.Only real function of a light is for plants, and asthetics.I dont even turn the lights on in a couple of unplanted stocktanks.Fish are very happy.

A light can be handy in a quarantine tank when checking for disease such as white spot, but not a necessity. A torch works just as well.
