Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have an RO unit which i only use for salt water mixes for my marine tank.
I want to use RO on my fresh water tanks and not use any water from the tap.
If i use Preis Diskus Minerals will this bring up my GH and KH?
Apart from testing the TDS do i need to test the conductivity? Which i know nothing about. If so how do i do this?

If anyone has or is using Preis Diskus Minerals can they give me a bit of info on it.
I found verry little on the net.

Darren.

Hi

Don't know if this helps??? One point I have used Bread Soda as opposed to baking soda and very little is needed.

Preis-Mineral-Salz 40 ml per 10 l of osmosis water
Enriches osmosis or tap water with all necessary minerals
Saltwater aquariums,Malawi-Tanganyika aquariums
Free of NaCI. Pure trace elements and salts for the increase of carbonate hardness
Can be combined with any PREIS product.

Thanks Russell.
According to the little bit of info that comes with preis; 15ml of product per 100L of RO water.
Thats fine except it is a powder and i was unable to convert ml to grams etc.

I also picked up Electro-right.
This seemed a little bit more straight forward. 2 ml per US gallon and 1 ml of ph adjuster per US gallon.
I added the stated dose and tested before i added any ph adjuster.
The ph of the RO water before adding electro-right was ph6.4 .
After adding the electro-right the ph was off the scale. When i tested with the TDS meter the screen went blank so i tested the GH. This was also off the scale.
I added 1/2 Ltr of this water to 5 gallons of pure RO to give me a ph of 7.2 and the TDS was still way to high at 650.

Can anyone help me out here i need to get this right and soon.
I am currently losing Abbot 6 fish a day and need to dilute what ever is contamanating my water.
I believe the tap water is the root of the problem.

I have a micro scales, I will drop up to you tomorrow. You can measure the amount you need then.

Hi Mate

Unfortunately any agitation of any sort will increase the Ph. as you know this drives of the Co2, thats why I run almost 80% RO to 20% pre membrane constantrly to the tank. but this will only work if you have a continuos overflow.
God it gets complicated!!!!!!!!!!

I just read on a French thread somewhere (thank you Google) that the 15ml are measured with the provided spoon.
Just thinking, some cough mixtures come up with a little plastic cup that measures 5ml for example. You could use this to get to your 15ml.

I hope this helps.

Preis Discus Minerals will not raise your conductivity. No need to test it.
Dosage depends what you water parameters you want to achieve.
if your water's kH is between 0-5 use 10 ml per 100l
Kh between 6-10 use 5mö per 100l
For live bearers use 10ml more for above dosages
for rift valley cichlids use 150ml per 100l

Unfortunately the preis discus minerals didnt come with a measuring spoon and verry little info.
I closest i have gotten to what i want is;
3.75ml of P.D.M. - 25L RO
This gives me; TDS-80 KH-0ppm GH-20ppm
PH-6.5
If i add 3/4 ml of bread soda to this i get; TDS-90 KH-10PPM GH-20PPM PH-7.8

I would like to end up with KH-70PPM GH-100PPM PH 6.8-7.

I have tried many different combinations and using baking soda and bread soda. All resulting in high ph with low hardness.

Any ideas how i can buffer the water with out raising the ph to high?
