Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,

Just to give you a heads up to all you curious Fishkeepers out there

www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.200712...LCDStudentMicroscope

Looks the biz. So if you wondered what those little white swimming specks in your tank were (?copepods) or you breeders out there wanted to know if your fish eggs were fertile/viable/fungused or if you just wanted to know what a brine shrimp looked like close up! this it the one for you. Should also be good for parasite identification using fish scrapings / Post Mortems etc.

The best thing is that it seems you can connect the optics to your computer/laptop and save the images. Looking forward to some interesting entries in next months photo competition !!!

Kind regards

Seany

I tried a night vision scope before to try and see some plecs after dark, it was useless. It was €600 well known name and had magnification of 2x, it was impossible to focus at such close range and the magnification did not help. 1x would have been better. The one lidl are offering is 3x so I imagine it would be even less useful... just in case you were thinking of getting one. On the bright side, now you have money for more fish :-)

The microscope would be quite interesting for those interested in looking at skin scrapes etc.
It would need much higher magnification to be used as a serious tool in this way but for those with an interest in having a play around and identifying the larger parasites it would be good.

Ok Guys,

I bought the microscope this morning and upon getting in from work this evening I set it up and connected it to my PC. Took about 1ml of water from the reef tank tonight and popped it on a slide to finally find out what these little white things are swimming around my tank. Remember these little guys are about 1mm long to the naked eye. What did I see.....

Magnified x 160 times

Magnified x4000 times

Magnified x1600 times (max). Closeup of left side of the head.

IS THIS A COPEPOD ???????

Best €130 I ever spent. I use microscopes at work costing more than €25,000 and the pictures this little scope produced are as good as anything I see at work!

I'll post these pics on the \"Photographs\" Forum as well for those who are not following the LIDL thread if that's ok with ADMIN.

Kind regards

Seany

That's certainly nice pictures! I see that Lidl is selling two types of microscopes (with and without a LCD monitor). I am about to buy one of these puppies, but cannot decide which one. How good do you find this LCD monitor? What resolution, size, picture quality, etc? Would you recommend the LCD instead of the good old oculars to watch through?
