Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

yesterday i picked up my new 205 Cath is working to day so i am setting it up just watched the DVD of the set up but now i am wondering about it the use of petroleum jelly my main cause for concern on the sealing ring. I would also take note that when they explain maintenance they show the medium being washed under tap water i can understand this first time out but not on regular maintenance just goes against the grain so does anyone know were i can get an alternative to the p jelly or the fluvel product they were talking about . also i am removing the carbon were would be the best place to put filter cotton in this set up.

Hi Mickey,

I use a 305 and find it good, except for the clips on the lid that could be better designed. I think most people find that a small amount of water seeps out over time. It should have 4 clips, not two.

When in Halying, we dropped into Maindenhead Aquatics and they had the small bottle of lubricant for the seal. I picked one up. There's about enough for two applications (it's a very very small bottle). I'm sure you could get in online or an LFS could order it for you. Maindenhead also have a site for spares:

www.maidenheadaquatics-spares.co.uk/

I put all my polishing media in the bottom basket and it works well. You also need to keep an eye on the input strainer as it can block pretty easily. It comes off for easy cleaning when doing a water change.

Overall, a good filter except for the lid clips. I clean mine every two months in a planted tank with no problems.

Regards,

Ken.

I have used petroleum jelly (vaseline) on selaing rings several times with no adverse affects on fish, so unless you have a better alternative to hand I would work away.

cheers mate will look it up!!! the one problems i found so far its a pain to set for a tank that is already running the hose being just one single length and my hoods mostly sit in side on ledges which the fittings don't suite at all so now i have everything to one end but i will try it on full flow should do the job ok in theory my tank is 106 liters filled to the brim and this should cope with 200 in rel terms about double but dont let Cath know that (           )

Sounds like vaseline does the trick.Another alternative, maybe,is what I use to seal my housing for my dive camera, just looked at the tube,\"O-ring grease\",designed specifically for o-rings,but no idea of ingredients or compatibility with fish.I will look into it.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Eheim used to do a special jelly for sealing O-rings. No idea if it is still available since their new filters use 4 clips and generally don't have a problem with leaking.
