Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

air pump always on? was created by Eddy (Eddy)
Hi Guys, I got a new air pump and was wondering if it was supposed to be kept on all the time or used periodically?

hi eddy

i leave my airpumps on all the time. i suppose it depends on how noisy they are. i have one that is really noisy and i turn it off at bed time and then back on the next day. i have never had any problem with them so far touch wood.

I have an Interpet pump which is pretty quiet. However, it can maneuver itself into positions that make it vibrate against something and therefore very noisy. I just make sure it's secure and away from any objects that it may move up against through vibration.

In terms of turning it off, it really depends on what you're using it for. If it's purely aeration through an air stone, then it should be ok to turn off at night. If it's aeration for a filter, then it would not be advisable to turn it off for any extended time as you'll most likely trigger a mini cycle in your tank.

These pumps are designed to be left on all the time so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. The only issue is noise. However, the more modern pumps are very quiet. In fact, the bubbles that the air creates are more noisy than the pump itself.

Regards,

Ken.

Thanks goldy and ksimpson. It is quiet enough and as you said the bubbles make more noise then the pump. I have a bubble wall affect which looks really good and the fish seem to enjoy it so i'll leave it on.

i find the same as ksimpson that the pump can move around and start to vibrate. I have mine suspended. I use the nets from the washing powder and let it hang from a hook with the pump inside. This way the pump doesnt touch off anything so no vibration. I just put a bubble curtain into my tank but it is driving me mad as it keeps floating back up through the stones. I have it well weighted (well obviously not enough) or so I thought. If I put any more rocks on it the bubble effect will be lost. Is your curtain staying buried and if so how have you got it weighted

Hi Goldy,

My pump is pretty quiet, it has rubber legs which helps. My bubble wall is staying down alright. It has 4 suckers that stick to the glass but I’m sure over time these will loose their effectiveness like my internal thermometer that floats aimlessly around the tank on occasions. Trying to cope with an outbreak of whitesposts at the mo, haven’t had that for ages. Oh the joys of it all!!!!
