Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Found 2 of these stores in Meath last week. From name, may have started as Horse shops. Both have a fairly good Fish section. I noticed that the fish for sale are generally bigger than those in other shops, most likely due to slow sales. One is in Navan and one is in Ashbourne. Anyone been into these places? Tiger barbs in Navan were lovely and Green Barbs in Ashbourne caught my eye.

Hi,
Only new to site, but have been in both shops. one in ashbourne has good plants at cheap prices...once you get them when they first come in... after a while you can see they're not looked after the best as stringy algae can be seen on them for days. at the start the one in ashbourne seemed to have alot of dead fish...haven't seen this as much more recently. but don't know if the people that work there know an awful lot about trop fish... they got alot of elephant noses in one thursday and put them in a tank with no hiding places...went in on the monday to see how they were... not one in sight...was told they sold out and they'd be in next week but haven't seen them since...They're also found of buying in ghost knife fish... but don't really give you any info on them other than they are marked yellow so they may bully other fish. also beware of the Daphina in jelly..it's out of date.

wouldn't recommend it to people only starting out.. but maybe to people with the research done...
saying this I haven't bought any of their fish, only plants... all the dead fish at the start put me off along with the rudeness of some staff and the lack of information they have...

their barbs do look good though, and they have nice guppies some times.

If it is the one in the spar shopping center in Ashbourne I would highly recommend it. As i have a freiend working next door in the tattoo shop I am there on a regular basis. The staff are great and the fish are of a very high quality. I think you need to go in and have a look for yourself as I go to this shop all the time and never have any probs with fish that I buy there. The shop gets a higher rating then some other places I have been to in my books!!!!

Good to see some feedback on this as I asked about the store in Navan in the Beginner's forum. I was in there last weekend for the first time and thought the setup was very good. I'm only starting out with fish keeping though so I can't really judge. The fish seemed lively but I didn't like the way the tanks were utterly bare apart from a substrate, which was very fine and barely covered the base in some tanks. The blue lights in the tanks also were really hard on the eyes but I'm sure it's for the good of the fish.
Someone mentioned their fish are larger than most petshops as maybe they don't sell as fast - last weekend they had a tank with Neon Tetras and they all seemed tiny so they possibly just got them in. Hopefully will be getting a few of them this weekend as my first fish :)

good luck with the tetras. shop in Navan seems better than ashbourne.I know they stock more stuff to do with fish...like they have structured backgrounds and ash only has plastic stuff...others here have bought fish in Navan and were very happy. they do seem to get good stock. (but the bare tanks are a worry, esp. for fish like elephant noses, but in fairness they are mainly bare in most places (have only substrate)and only shy or noctornal fish like elephantnoses are given hiding, guess it's hard to sell fish people can't see) one in ashbourne has a tank with plastic plants and oscars in it now.
