Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello.
Have small problem. Bought Koralia 1 form US and only when it arrived realized that there is different voltage standarts here and there. So may be enyone had same issue and how did you manage to solve it (I recon just travel adapter is not an option here 'couse it need to convert 220 into 110).
Also find at eBay that item . Will it be enough for pump or no? Also Fluval 105 coming from US and i belive it for 110V too.... So... that how i saved my money

You can get converters. Peats on Parnell Street stock them AFAIK. People use them to run televisions and fridges brought over from the US (that's US people who move here for work). Best thing to do would be to check that they support the wattage of the items you want to run. Filters run at a low wattage so you shouldn't have any problems running them on a converter.

The difference is well known that's why you never hear of anybody importing electrical kit from the US as the saving is lost on duty and the need for a converter.

Regards,

Ken.

I'm not local and never been in US :) so it was first time experience for me... so I can go for that kind of converter without trouble? I live in Limerick and best price is on eBay :)

Thanks!

It should be ok. Don't run anything like a heater through it. But a filter should be fine as the wattage is low.

There are step-up/stepdown tranformers you can buy to convert the wattage. They are almost like adapters but change the wattage/voltage. Thery are sold in Maplin Electronics and are quite cheap. Have a look at this link and from this you could check out ebay and get it for half the price.

Hope this helps!!

I would suggest you bring the exact electrical specs of the filter to Maplin (or the filter itself) and get to them to check that the converter you got is adequate to run the filter. Sounds like it's not generating enough power. You may need a bigger converter.

Ken.

Totally agree with KenS, you need a more powerful converter. To the best of my knowledge you can get four different types starting at 45watt working up. As a former staff member of Maplin I would be careful who you speak to esp on the weekend, try getting a senior sales guy/gal to talk to ya! If you want PM the specs of the filter and I will let you know what you need!!

there is only 3 spec written on back of pump: 117V, ~60H, 4W
may be better to buy something like that:http://www.110220volts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=110220volts/CTGY/Up-DownTransformer

updated: tried different one from my friend and pump started OK, so changed in Maplin for different one and it's working now :cheer:
