Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Pressurized Co2 Day 1

Well I got my complete co2 kit yesterday (165 euro)
Got it filled this morning (20 euro)
So for 185 euro im hoping that’s me sorted for the next 6 months to a year

I really don’t know how long it will last but its roughly 2000g
Compared to the 11g tetra plant system I was using
Which lasted about a month but didn’t deliver enough co2 to my tank

So I have it all set up now I just need to go get a timer for the shut off solenoid
Please correct me if I have made any mistakes here

I have the valve on the top of the bottle set to full open 50 bar
I then set the second gauge to 1.5 bar?
And the needle valve is set so that I have a fine mist coming from the reactor

im not too sure if I have enough or too much coming out yet just incase im going to turn it off in a few hours before I go to work and turn it on again in the morning when I have more time to monitor it.
Better too little co2 than too much

Any views or suggestions would be appreciated

That sounds like you have everything set up as it should be. The first gauge is sounding correct for a 2kg, mine was about 800 psi or 55 bar for a 2kg fire extinguisher. The second gauge also sounds good and 1.5 bar is what I am running mine at too. As for the reactor and regulating the amount of co2 going into the tank, do you have a bubble counter? If you do then it should be running or a rate of about 3-4 bps in order to achieve a co2 level of about 30ppm.

In a few short weeks you will see the benefits of compressed co2 and you will think that the money is definitely worth it.

Well done

Thanks Denis

It’s good to get some reassurance
Unfortunately the one thing that was not in the kit is a bubble counter
I might buy one but for the moment in watching the ph with a ph pen
I also have a drop checker set up with 4 kh solution.
So fingers crossed

Donal

Well now I know!
I just noticed I put in this thread 6 months and 2 week ago
As it happens my c02 ran out 2 weeks ago, so 2kg of c02 on a 160L tank lasted me 6 months :)
I have not refilled my c02 yet as tomorrow I will start striping my tank  our sitting room needs to be redecorated so all my fish must go for a while

That sounds about right LimerickBandit, I probably get about a year or so out of a 5kg CO2 cylinder on a 150L tank.
